A 69-year-old Laurel man has died days after a charter bus struck him while he was riding his bicycle along Sussex Highway, according to Delaware State Police. Lawrence Schreiber was hospitalized following the October 6 crash and succumbed to his injuries on October 11.

The crash happened at approximately 4:20 p.m. on Sussex Highway, also known as U.S. 13, in Laurel, according to Delaware State Police, as NBC10 Philadelphia reported. Investigators said a Van Hool charter bus was traveling south in the left lane of the highway at the time of the collision.

How The Collision Unfolded

According to the preliminary investigation, Schreiber was riding south on the shoulder of the road before crossing the southbound lanes to move into a dedicated left-turn lane. That maneuver put him directly into the bus's path, the station's report states. Officials said the bus struck him despite the driver's attempts to avoid the collision.

Schreiber was taken to a hospital following the crash, per the same account, before dying from his injuries five days later. The bus driver and the bus's passengers were not injured in the crash.

Investigation Continues, Police Seek Witnesses

Delaware State Police have asked anyone with information about the crash to contact Master Corporal K. Argo at (302) 703-3264. Witnesses can also reach investigators through a private Facebook message to Delaware State Police or by calling Delaware Crime Stoppers at (800) 847-3333.

This is not the first fatal bicyclist crash Delaware State Police have investigated in Sussex County in recent years. In November 2024, the department's Collision Reconstruction Unit investigated a fatal bicycle crash on Route 113 between Dagsboro and Millsboro, according to WDEL. No cause of death or charges tied to that earlier case were detailed in that report.

The investigation into Schreiber's death remains open as Delaware State Police continue to gather information from anyone who witnessed the crash on Sussex Highway.
