Star Community Bar, the Little Five Points dive that has hosted underground music and comedy since 1991, will close at the end of 2026 after 35 years. Red Light Café, the Virginia-Highland listening room known for jazz and burlesque shows, will move into the building at 437 Moreland Ave. NE in January 2027.
Star Bar shared the news exclusively with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution this week. Co-owner Luke Lewis said Red Light Café would carry the live-arts institution forward for another 20 to 30 years, according to the outlet's report. The bar has operated on Moreland Avenue in Little Five Points for over three decades and has hosted acts including Killer Mike and Drive-By Truckers, as well as the long-running amateur comedy night Rotknee Presents.
The closure arrives just as the bar prepares for what's being billed as its 35th anniversary celebration this Saturday, October 31, featuring performances, a party and a show by The Bad Spell for a $20 ticket price. Star Bar first opened its doors in the former Citizens & Southern National Bank building in 1991, a detail FOX 5 Atlanta noted during an earlier fight to save the venue.
Red Light Café's Displacement From Amsterdam Walk
Red Light Café isn't leaving Virginia-Highland by choice. The venue is being forced out of the Amsterdam Walk district because of redevelopment plans there, and it will relocate into the Star Bar building once that move happens. Red Light Café has operated at Amsterdam Walk since the 1990s as part of a hub of local businesses, per Urbanize Atlanta.
Portman Holdings is preparing to redevelop the nearly 11-acre Amsterdam Walk site in two phases, and the outlet's reporting indicates phase one could replace a majority if not all of the buildings currently operating there. That first phase is planned to include 666 multifamily units and 96,452 square feet of commercial space — more than half of the total apartments Atlanta City Council had already approved for the site. Red Light Café describes itself as Atlanta's premiere listening room for Americana, bluegrass, country and western, folk, blues, jazz and roots rock, and its own site notes it also hosts some of the best burlesque in the Southeast, with tables and seating for over 100 people alongside a full bar and kitchen.
A Site That Nearly Became Something Else Entirely
Star Bar's survival wasn't guaranteed. The building's fate was in question as recently as 2022, when Third & Urban proposed a mixed-use development that would have demolished the Little Five Points structure the bar had called home for three decades, according to Rough Draft Atlanta. That plan would have replaced the current building with a new three-story structure containing a basement space for the bar along with two restaurants and office space, and the developer had offered Star Bar that basement spot as a possible new home.
The redevelopment never happened. Third & Urban ultimately canceled its plans for the 2.5-acre site at Moreland and Euclid avenues, a reversal that followed a Change.org petition opposing the project that gathered just shy of 8,000 signatures, the same Urbanize Atlanta report states. Star Bar's existing lease ended December 31, 2022, and its owners had an agreement in principle to resume lease discussions in 2023; a gentleman's agreement allowed the venue to stay open that year. That earlier reprieve has now given way to the planned 2026 closure and handoff to Red Light Café.
What Comes Next for the Building
The dossier of public reporting does not spell out what the Star Bar building will look like once Red Light Café takes it over, nor does it confirm the final name, ownership structure or exact opening date for the relocated venue beyond the January 2027 timeframe. What is clear is that two of Atlanta's longtime live-entertainment rooms — one a gritty Little Five Points staple, the other a Virginia-Highland listening room with its own burlesque pedigree — are about to share the same address on Moreland Avenue.
