Staff at Centennial High School in Fort Collins responded to a medical event involving a student on Tuesday afternoon and, following standard safety procedures, searched the student's backpack — discovering a loaded handgun inside. The student was transported to a local hospital, and police say they do not believe there is any continuing threat to the school, students, or the public.

Fort Collins Police Services said staff responded to the medical event on Tuesday afternoon, according to KDVR. As part of their response, staff searched the student's backpack, where they found the loaded firearm, prompting a call to police. Officers with Fort Collins Police Services are now investigating the incident, and the department said it would not provide additional public updates, per information shared in a Fort Collins Police Services post on Facebook.

The student was taken to a nearby hospital while officials investigated, KDVR reported, and remains there under supervision. Police have said they do not believe there is any active threat tied to the incident.

No Threat Identified, But Questions Remain

Fort Collins police have been clear that they do not believe the discovery points to any ongoing danger to the school community. The station's report does not detail how the medical event unfolded, what led staff to search the backpack, or what prompted the broader concern that triggered the safety protocol in the first place. Fort Collins Police Services has not released further details about the student's identity or the circumstances surrounding the gun's presence at school.

A Pattern Playing Out Statewide

Colorado schools have grappled with a string of similar incidents in recent years. In April, a student at Sierra High School was taken into custody after being found with a handgun in a bathroom, according to FOX21 News. Police said the student had allegedly used the weapon to threaten another student before a school resource officer responded around 2:30 p.m. that day and located a loaded handgun in the teen's waistband during a pat-down. No students were injured and the gun was not fired, FOX21 noted.

The broader numbers help explain why these incidents keep surfacing. Colorado has seen 25 incidents of gunfire on school campuses since 2013, according to Everytown for Gun Safety data cited by Colorado Public Radio. The outlet also reported that Colorado students filed the highest number of Safe2Tell reports in the program's history during the 2023-24 school year, even as implementation of threat assessment and mental-health support continues to vary widely by school district, with many schools understaffed in roles like psychologists and social workers.

Research Links Firearm Access to Mental Health Struggles

A study examining data from more than 46,000 Colorado high school students who completed the Healthy Kids Colorado Survey found that one in five reported having easy access to a handgun, according to the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. Researchers found students were significantly more likely to report easy handgun access if they had felt sad or hopeless almost every day for two weeks, had attempted suicide, or had been in a physical fight in the past year, with those groups reporting access rates of 24.2 percent, 30.1 percent, and 31.8 percent respectively.

For now, the Centennial High School case remains under investigation by Fort Collins police, with no further public updates expected at this time.
