Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is getting a new nonstop connection to Germany, with Lufthansa set to launch service between Phoenix and Munich on August 3, 2027. Mayor Kate Gallego announced the news, saying Sky Harbor is adding another nonstop international connection that will make it easier for Arizonans to experience one of Germany's cities, and noted the timing could suit travelers eyeing an Oktoberfest trip next fall.
The year-round flight will operate three times weekly, on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, using an Airbus A350-900 configured with 293 total seats split across Business, Premium Economy, and Economy classes, according to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The outbound flight departs Munich at 1:20 p.m. and lands in Phoenix at 4:00 p.m., with the return leg departing at 5:50 p.m. Phoenix Sky Harbor also projects the new route will generate an annual economic impact of more than $80 million for the metro area.
In a social media post, the mayor said
the new Lufthansa service connects Phoenix and Munich and will open up easier travel between Arizona and the German city.
Part of Lufthansa's Biggest Expansion Since 2020
The Phoenix addition is one piece of a much larger push by Lufthansa Group, which announced its Summer 2027 flight schedule includes 10 new intercontinental routes, marking the airline group's largest long-haul network expansion across its European hubs since 2020. Other new U.S. additions in that rollout include a Frankfurt-to-Columbus route, according to Lufthansa Group. The Phoenix launch will add a new U.S. destination.
For Phoenix specifically, the route adds a new nonstop connection to Germany. Lufthansa's arrival will also re-establish Phoenix's first direct air link to Germany since 2025, when German carrier Condor ended its seasonal nonstop flights to Frankfurt.
Sky Harbor's Growing International Reach
With Lufthansa joining the lineup, Sky Harbor will host nonstop European service representing all three major global airline alliances, per One Mile at a Time: Star Alliance through Lufthansa, Oneworld through British Airways, and SkyTeam through Air France. Air France began its Paris flights in 2024, while British Airways has served Phoenix to London for years, according to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.
The airport's international growth hasn't been limited to Europe. Hoodline previously reported that China Airlines launched Taipei flights, operating Airbus A350 service three days a week. Sky Harbor's scale underpins all of this expansion: the Phoenix Airport System as a whole generates an estimated $44.3 billion in total annual economic impact, while Sky Harbor handles over 1,000 flights and 130,000 passengers daily.
An August Start Ahead of Oktoberfest
The August 2027 launch comes ahead of Oktoberfest, a season Mayor Gallego flagged in her announcement, giving Arizonans a direct path to Munich's festivities. The route will also make travel between Munich and Phoenix easier.
