A man wielding a machete rushed toward Jontrell Sanders's car near Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport's cell phone lot Thursday afternoon and climbed inside in an attempt to steal it as Sanders held onto the key fob. Police arrived moments later and took the suspect into custody without reported serious injuries.
Sanders, who has worked at the airport for more than seven years and is known on social media as Triple Johnny, told WSB-TV that the man approached him and asked for help finding his daughter before turning aggressive. As Sanders tried to drive away, the man allegedly tried to hit him with the weapon, which Sanders described as resembling a narrow butcher knife roughly five or six inches long, and scratched his car in the process.
Atlanta police identified the suspect as Jeremy Turner. He now faces two counts of aggravated assault, disorderly conduct, and possession of a knife during the commission of a felony, according to the same report. Cellphone video captured part of the encounter, including officers ordering Turner to show his hands.
A Driver's Split-Second Decision
Sanders said he was frightened during the confrontation but relied on the airport's safety protocols to get through it. Holding onto the key fob rather than handing it over appears to have been the decisive factor that kept the attempted theft from escalating further, since the account indicates Turner climbed into the vehicle in an attempt to steal it but could not drive off without it.
The scratched exterior of Sanders's car was the only reported physical damage tied to the incident, and authorities say no significant injuries resulted. Hartsfield-Jackson has roughly 30,000 on-site parking spaces.
Legal Exposure Under Georgia Law
The charges against Turner carry significant weight under state statute. Aggravated assault alone can bring between one and 20 years in prison, up to 20 years of probation, and fines as high as $100,000, per Moffitt Law. The weapon charge adds its own mandatory exposure: Georgia law treats possession of a knife with a blade of three inches or longer during a felony as a separate offense carrying up to five additional years in prison that cannot be satisfied through probation alone, according to Divorce, Family, Criminal Defense Lawyers Canton GA.
Authorities also say Turner has an active warrant out of Fulton County. The case involves Atlanta police and Clayton County proceedings.
The Airport Incident
The confrontation took place near the airport's cell phone lot.
The incident also lands amid a broader crackdown on vehicle-related crime at the airport. FOX 5 Atlanta reported that vehicle thefts at Hartsfield-Jackson dropped by nearly half in early 2026 after more than 300 vehicles were stolen there in 2024, a spike that pushed local authorities to add patrols and deploy anti-theft technology. The station also noted a 26% drop in citywide auto thefts over the same period, which police attributed to task forces focused on major transportation hubs.
Hoodline has previously covered public safety incidents at Hartsfield-Jackson, including the airport bathroom stabbing death reported earlier this month. It remains unclear when Turner's preliminary hearing will take place in Clayton County or what specifically prompted the outstanding Fulton County warrant against him.
