A man is in critical condition after being shot near Lamar Avenue in Memphis's Bethel Grove neighborhood Friday evening, and a black Nissan SUV fled the scene. The victim arrived at a nearby fire station in a private vehicle before being rushed to a hospital, and investigators have not released details about what led to the gunfire.
Memphis police said officers responded to a shooting call at 2960 Lamar Avenue, according to FOX13 Memphis. A gunshot victim was dropped off at Fire Station #22 on Lamar Avenue just after 5 p.m. and was transported to the hospital in critical condition, per Action News 5. Memphis police previously confirmed that the male victim arrived at the fire station in a private vehicle, FOX13 Memphis reported.
Investigators later located a crime scene near Semmes Street and Wildrose Street, according to the same account. Police said a black Nissan SUV fled the area. As of Friday night, police had not identified the victim, and MPD characterized the information it released as preliminary.
Investigation Remains Active, No Arrests Announced
No arrests have been announced in connection with the shooting, and the Memphis Police Department has not released a motive or detailed what led to the gunfire. Action News 5 described the case plainly: “This is now an active investigation.” The outlet's report corroborates the location of the crime scene and the fleeing SUV, though it does not name the victim or any suspects.
Months before the Bethel Grove shooting, a separate WREG report published May 16, 2026, described two men found dead inside a vehicle after officers responded to a shooting call just after 10:30 p.m. at Wildrose and Semmes streets near Lamar Avenue — the same intersection named in the Bethel Grove case. Both victims in that shooting were pronounced dead on scene, according to WREG, which reported the deaths occurred near the Orange Mound neighborhood. The available evidence does not establish whether that shooting and the Bethel Grove incident are connected, and they are being treated here as separate events.
Part Of A Broader Pattern Of Shootings
Elsewhere in the city, a man was seriously injured in a separate shooting in South Memphis, according to a FOX13 Memphis report. That incident, like the Bethel Grove case, remained under investigation with limited details released publicly.
The shootings arrive even as Memphis officials have touted an overall drop in violent crime. The Memphis Police Department said the city recorded fewer than 200 murders in 2025, which it called a historic decline and the first time the city reached that milestone since 2019, according to a statement posted to the department's website. That broader trend offers little immediate comfort to Bethel Grove residents still waiting for answers about Friday's shooting, as the investigation into the critically injured victim's case continues.
