Louisville Metro Police officers found two men shot inside a vehicle Wednesday night near Black Mudd Park, and one of them did not survive. Officers responded at 9:17 p.m. to the 1700 block of Rangeland Road after a report of a shooting, discovering the men inside the car moments later.
One of the men was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was taken to UofL Hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening, according to wdrbwave.com. Police have not identified either man publicly. As of the latest update, investigators said there were no known suspects.
No Suspects Identified as Investigation Continues
LMPD has not released details about what led to the shooting or any possible motive. The department is asking anyone with information to call the LMPD Anonymous Tip Line at (502) 574-5673 or submit a tip through the online Crime Tip Portal, per the same account from wdrbwave.com.
The shooting in Black Mudd Park echoes another case from earlier this year: on Aug. 13, a man died after he was found shot inside a vehicle in Louisville's Cloverleaf neighborhood, according to WDRB. That earlier case does not appear to be connected to Wednesday's shooting, and no link between the two has been reported.
City Data Points to Fewer Shootings This Year
The Wednesday night shooting comes as Louisville has reported broader declines in gun violence this year. City officials said earlier in 2026 that homicide victims were down 23% compared with the same point in 2025, with nonfatal shooting victims down 25%, according to figures from LouisvilleKY.gov. The city's Office for Violence Prevention has also noted that between 2020 and 2025, Louisville recorded nearly 900 homicides, 91% of them involving a firearm, while more than 2,700 people survived nonfatal shootings during that same stretch, per the city's year-to-date violence data.
Those citywide trends offer some context, but they do little to explain what happened on Rangeland Road Wednesday night. For now, police have not named a suspect or described a motive, and the investigation into the shooting at Black Mudd Park remains open.
