A man is dead after Fairview Heights police say he ran toward officers with a knife early Friday morning and was shot several times. The shooting capped a night that began with a frantic 911 call reporting a man driving through a yard.
According to firstalert4.com, someone called 911 around 1:30 a.m. to report that a man was on drugs and driving through their yard in the 9100 block of Bunkum Road. The caller told dispatchers the man was going to “kill himself or someone else,” according to the same report.
Police say the man refused to listen to their commands or stop, and officers then shot him several times, per the outlet's account. He was treated at the scene before being taken to a hospital, where he died; officers involved were not injured, the station reported.
Police Say Cameras Were Rolling
Fairview Heights police told the outlet that officers' body cameras and car cameras were recording during the incident. Illinois State Police are investigating the shooting, as is standard practice for officer-involved deaths in the state.
Separately, KSDK reported a call about an incident on Bunkum Road and a shooting Friday morning.
Authorities had not provided further information about the incident at the time of that report, and KSDK said it would update the story as more details become available.
