A man was found shot inside a Kansas City home early Saturday morning and later died at a hospital, according to police. Officers responded to a shooting call just before 4 a.m. near East 42nd Street and Park Avenue, where they discovered the victim unresponsive on the floor inside the residence.
Officers located the man suffering from apparent gunshot trauma, according to fox4kc.com. First responders rushed him to a hospital, but he died from his injuries, police said. The Kansas City Police Department is investigating the shooting as a homicide, and as of the initial report, no suspects were in custody, per KMBC.
Police have not released the man's identity, and no suspect description or possible motive has been made public. Anyone with information has been asked to call the Crime Stoppers TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS, per KCPD.
A Year of Declining Violence, With Conflicting Counts
The killing comes as Kansas City has been tracking a broader drop in violent crime this year. As of October 19, the department had reported 108 homicides in 2026, a 12% decrease from the same point in 2025 and a five-year low for the city, according to KCUR. Nonfatal shootings were down even more sharply, with 267 recorded by October compared with 338 over the same stretch in 2025, a 21% decrease, the station reported.
Police credited the decline to more officers on the street, focused deterrence strategies and closer collaboration with the community, KCUR reported. KCPD spokesman Sergeant Phil DiMartino said 51 of the year's 108 homicides at that point had stemmed from disagreements that escalated into violence, not counting a separate killing on October 18 that remained under investigation, per the same KCUR report. DiMartino also pointed to geographic shifts, noting the Center patrol zone had recorded 21 homicides in 2026 compared with 26 the year before, while East patrol was at 30 compared with 42 in 2025.
The exact year-to-date homicide tally has varied depending on the source and date of reporting. An October 31, 2026 report listed 111 homicides for 2026 and a 79% UCR/NIBRS clearance rate, while a separate database entry from kansascity.com described a different, earlier killing as the city's 109th homicide of the year. That same database entry noted Kansas City had recorded 122 homicides at the same point in 2025.
Another Shooting on the Same Street
East 42nd Street saw another shooting earlier in 2026. The Kansas City Star's database referenced a separate case in which 28-year-old Rhegan Spiegel was found shot in the 1200 block of East 42nd Street and later died at a hospital, kansascity.com reported. It is not established whether that earlier shooting is connected in any way to Saturday's homicide near East 42nd and Park Avenue.
No arrest has been announced in Saturday's shooting, and police have not released additional details about the victim or a possible suspect. Investigators are continuing to ask the public for help, and anyone with information can reach the Crime Stoppers TIPS Hotline.
