A man drowned in Sims Bayou near Houston's Allendale neighborhood Saturday evening after entering the water despite a bystander's warning not to, according to Houston police. The man's car had broken down near Mosa Creek at Allendale when a witness stopped to help him with repairs, and what followed turned a roadside breakdown into a fatal decision.

The incident happened around 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 17, as reported by Click2Houston. While the witness was helping with the vehicle, the man said he wanted to swim in the bayou. The witness told him not to, but he went into the water anyway, fully clothed, and began swimming.

According to the same report, the man went under multiple times. On his last attempt to go under, he never resurfaced. Houston police responded to the scene and recovered his body, though the department has not released his identity. KHOU 11 reports that investigators have not established how the man was pulled from the water or whether dive teams were called in to help, and the station says it is still seeking answers from Houston police about those details.

A Waterway With a Troubling Recent History

Sims Bayou has turned up in Harris County's death records before. Houston police records reviewed by Houston Public Media show four bodies found in Sims and Halls bayous combined between September 13, 2024, and September 20, 2025. Among the cases tied specifically to Sims Bayou, 24-year-old Carl Newton died in February 2025 from sudden cardiac death and hypothermia, and 30-year-old Raymond Hatten's July 2025 death was listed as undetermined, per data reported by KHOU.com.

Those cases fit into a broader, and growing, pattern across Houston's bayou system. The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences had documented 31 people whose bodies were recovered from local bayous in 2025 alone, the station's data review found, with bayou deaths nearly tripling since just 12 were reported in 2019. The medical examiner investigated 35 bayou cases in 2024, 22 in 2023, 20 in 2022 and 16 in 2021, according to that same reporting.

Causes of Death Often Remain Unresolved

Many of these cases remain unresolved. Houston police responded to 39 incidents involving bodies found in area bayous between September 2024 and September 2025, Houston Public Media reported, and causes of death were still pending for 15 of those people while 11 others were listed as undetermined — meaning roughly two out of every three bayou-related deaths in that span lacked a conclusive cause of death.

A separate accounting by the Houston Chronicle found at least 28 bayou deaths in 2025 as of mid-November, with 15 of them still classified as undetermined. Of the known causes among that group, seven were drownings, two were suicides, one was a sudden cardiac death, and two involved blunt-force injuries. The Chronicle separately confirmed that 33-year-old Anthony Azua's death, first reported in March 2025, was ultimately ruled a drowning, and documented another case in September 2025 in which a witness reported a man entering Buffalo Bayou near Jensen and Navigation boulevards and never resurfacing.

For now, the man who drowned Saturday in Sims Bayou remains unidentified in public records, and key questions about the recovery effort — including whether dive teams were dispatched — have not been answered by Houston police.
