Charges Filed Over Sept. 20 Shooting
The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney's Office charged Carroll with first-degree assault and armed criminal action in connection with a shooting that happened on September 20 at a liquor store in the 8300 block of Lackland Road, according to FOX 2. Under Missouri law, first-degree assault is classified as a Class B felony unless the victim suffers great bodily harm or qualifies as a special victim, according to the Missouri Revisor of Statutes. The armed criminal action charge applies when a felony is committed with the use, assistance, or aid of a dangerous instrument or deadly weapon, per the same statutory code.
Surveillance video reportedly captured Carroll walking into the store and shooting one victim in the face, the station's report states. A witness also told police that Carroll called the victim a three-word expletive before opening fire. The victim was taken to a hospital and treated for various injuries, though the extent of those injuries has not been detailed.
Arrest Came Weeks After the Shooting
Authorities served the warrant for Carroll's arrest on Monday, roughly two weeks after the shooting occurred. Per charging documents, Carroll was on probation at the time of the alleged shooting, the outlet reported.
Missouri law allows judges some flexibility in how prior probation terms factor into sentencing. A court may reduce a prison or jail sentence by crediting all or part of the time a defendant already spent on probation, and if probation is revoked, the court can also place an offender on a second term of probation, according to the Missouri Revisor of Statutes. It remains unclear how, if at all, that provision might apply in Carroll's case.
Missouri court records reportedly list Carroll's preliminary hearing for November 2, when the case is expected to move forward in the judicial process.
