A commercial burglary call near Seventh Street and Dunlap Avenue in north Phoenix turned into a standoff when officers found a man perched on a strip mall roof who refused to come down. By the time it was over, he had crashed through ductwork into one of the units below and was hauled off to the hospital.
Phoenix police said they responded to the burglary call at the strip mall on Thursday, according to 12News. Officers arriving at the scene found a person on the roof who would not climb down, the outlet reported, citing police. The station reported that police said the suspect then climbed into the building's ductwork and ultimately fell into one of the strip mall's units, causing damage to the property in the process.
Drone Assistance Used to Take Suspect Into Custody
Police turned to a drone to help bring the standoff to a close, using the aircraft to assist in taking the suspect into custody, the station's report states. The man was then transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, per the same account. According to 12News, the suspect had been inside the property illegally.
Phoenix’s drone program also has a public oversight framework: a city committee approves participating departments and their operating procedures, while a technical and privacy subcommittee reviews data-handling practices and protections for civil liberties. The city says the program is meant to operate transparently and makes monthly usage data available. Phoenix’s UAS program page describes the oversight structure and links to the usage data.
Phoenix Police Department policy authorizes certified personnel to use drones for planned or unplanned event management, investigative support and tactical support. The policy says the technology is intended to improve situational awareness and reduce the risk of injury, while requiring operations to comply with applicable law and respect privacy rights. The department’s UAS policy sets out those guidelines.
Beyond that, the picture remains incomplete. Police have not released the suspect's name, nor have they said why he was on the roof in the first place, the article notes. Police said the investigation into the incident remains ongoing, and no further details have been made public.
