A man was fatally shot in Hawaiian Gardens late Friday night, and homicide detectives have yet to release any information about who pulled the trigger. Sheriff's deputies found him suffering from at least one gunshot wound in the area of 226th Street and Horst Avenue, and he was rushed to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.
According to NBC Los Angeles, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department confirmed that a person was shot and killed late Friday in Hawaiian Gardens, with the shooting reported just after 11 p.m. A separate account from mynewsla.com places the shooting at about 11:10 p.m. Friday in the 12000 block of 226th Street, noting that paramedics took the man to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Officials have not released the victim's name, and no suspect description has been made public. The circumstances leading up to the shooting also remain unknown, and investigators have not said what, if anything, prompted the gunfire.
Separate Halloween-Night Shooting Report Adds Confusion
A separate report further complicates the picture of violence in the small Los Angeles County city Friday night. Fox 11 reported a shooting at about 7:40 p.m. in the 21900 block of Arline Avenue near Carson Street and the San Gabriel River Freeway, in which paramedics pronounced a man dead at the scene. That account, which states the man's name was withheld pending notification of next of kin and that no suspect description was immediately available, describes a different time and location than the 11:10 p.m. shooting near 226th Street, and it is not clear whether the two reports describe the same incident or two separate shootings in Hawaiian Gardens that night.
The uncertainty echoes a pattern seen in the city before. In October 2022, LASD deputies responded to a gunshot-victim call in the 22300 block of Wardham Avenue, where they later determined that 14-year-old passenger and driver Carlos Alvarez-Diaz had been shot while driving north on Norwalk Boulevard at 226th Street, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Alvarez-Diaz was pronounced deceased at the scene, while a 14-year-old passenger in his car was also struck by gunfire but survived, per the sheriff's department.
Reward Offered, Suspect Never Caught in Earlier Case
That 2022 case remains unsolved years later. Investigators described the suspect vehicle as a dark-colored four-door car carrying several males, and ABC7 reported that detectives were looking for a man in his late teens or early twenties who was wearing a black T-shirt and black hat at the time of the shooting. The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and the city of Hawaiian Gardens later combined to offer a $30,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in that killing, the sheriff's department said.
No such reward has been announced in connection with Friday night's shooting, and it remains unclear whether the case is linked in any way to past violence in the city. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has posted about the investigation on social media, with its official account writing that homicide detectives were responding to a shooting death investigation in the 12000 block of 226th Street in Hawaiian Gardens.
