A man was found shot to death inside a car in the parking lot of a Steak ’n Shake on Hampton Avenue early Thursday, in a St. Louis neighborhood that had not recorded a single homicide in six years. Officers discovered the victim inside a Hyundai sedan in the restaurant’s lot in the 1200 block of Hampton Avenue, near Dogtown, and he was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The shooting happened in the Clayton-Tamm neighborhood, though the exact timing is disputed between outlets. FOX 2 reported the shooting occurred around 2:15 a.m. Thursday, while First Alert 4 cited police placing the incident at about 2:10 a.m. in the same stretch of Hampton Avenue. No suspects have been identified, according to FOX 2’s report.
Investigators have not pinned down exactly where the shooting itself took place. First Alert 4’s report states plainly that it is unclear at this time whether the shooting happened at Steak ‘n Shake or elsewhere. Employees and neighbors said they did not hear gunshots, even as people who said they were with the man went into the restaurant asking for help, the station reported.
Surveillance Account Still Unconfirmed
A Steak ’n Shake employee described security footage that reportedly showed a gunman pulling up and firing into the car, but that account had not been verified by law enforcement as of the reporting. First Alert 4 said it was still working to confirm the claim with police, leaving the central question of where and how the shooting unfolded unresolved for now.
First Homicide in Clayton-Tamm Since 2016
The killing marks the first shooting and first murder in the Clayton-Tamm neighborhood in the past six years, per the same outlet’s reporting. The station’s report also noted this is the first homicide of the year for the neighborhood. The last recorded homicide in Clayton-Tamm before this one came on Dec. 30, 2016, when a 36-year-old man was stabbed to death in the 1000 block of Art Hill Place, according to KSDK.
By comparison, the neighboring Cheltenham neighborhood has seen two murders and three shootings over the same six-year span, with its last murder in 2023 and its last shooting in 2024, First Alert 4 reported. Clayton-Tamm’s long stretch without violence is part of what has made Thursday’s shooting stand out so sharply in the area.
A Familiar Stretch of Hampton Avenue
This is not the first fatal shooting tied to a fast-food lot on Hampton Avenue in Clayton-Tamm. On June 7, 2022, a shooting outside a McDonald’s in the 1400 block of Hampton Avenue left 23-year-old Kevyn Henderson dead, with officers finding him lying against the restaurant wall and pronouncing him dead at the scene, FOX 2 reported. Police took Terrance King into custody at that scene while he was still holding a firearm near Henderson, according to the outlet.
The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office initially charged King with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in that case, FOX 2 reported. King ultimately pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of voluntary manslaughter and agreed to a 12-year term in state prison, the outlet said. No connection between that case and Thursday’s shooting has been established, and investigators have not released any suspect description or motive in the new case.
