In September, a 44-year-old woman was kicked and injured inside a salon on 52nd Street in Borough Park after an argument with a man turned physical, and the attacker fled the scene on foot before police could catch him. The victim was taken to the hospital following the assault, and investigators are now asking the public for help identifying the man responsible.
According to News12 Brooklyn, the confrontation began as an argument between the man and the woman inside the salon before he attacked her and ran off. Police have requested information from anyone who may know about the incident, though no suspect description or motive for the argument has been released. The case falls under the jurisdiction of the NYPD's 66th Precinct, which is headquartered at 5822 16th Avenue and oversees Borough Park, Kensington, and Midwood, according to NYC.gov.
What Charges Could the Attacker Face?
Whether the suspect, once identified, faces misdemeanor or felony charges will likely hinge on the severity of the woman's injuries. Under New York Penal Law Section 120.00, assault in the third degree is a Class A misdemeanor carrying up to 364 days in jail, three years of probation, and a $1,000 fine for intentionally or recklessly causing physical injury, per NYSenate.gov. If prosecutors determine the attack caused serious physical injury or involved a dangerous instrument, the same legal code outlines a harsher path: assault in the second degree is a Class D violent felony punishable by two to seven years in state prison.
The outcome will depend on the extent of the woman's injuries and what investigators ultimately determine about the attack.
A Pattern of Commercial Violence in the Neighborhood
This is not the first time a Borough Park business has become the scene of a violent confrontation this year. In July, a 21-year-old woman was strangled inside a commercial establishment near Fort Hamilton Parkway and 45th Street by a male suspect who also fled on foot, according to News12 Brooklyn, with NYPD Crime Stoppers offering up to $3,500 for information in that case — a story Hoodline covered in its own report. Just last month, Hoodline also reported on a 14-year-old slashed inside a Borough Park synagogue, with a congregant held by police.
A similar dispute played out in Crown Heights in June, when a verbal argument over a declined payment card at Sunny Nail & Salon turned violent and a customer slashed two employees, sending both to the hospital, as reported by News12 Long Island. A 23-year-old suspect in that incident was arrested and charged with three counts of assault.
Borough Park's Crime Picture
Borough Park has historically recorded lower violent crime rates than much of New York City, with a non-fatal assault rate of just 19 per 100,000 residents in 2018, according to data cited on Wikipedia. Total recorded crime in the 66th Precinct fell by more than 87% between 1990 and 2018. The dense neighborhood, part of Brooklyn Community District 12, has a population density exceeding 50,000 residents per square mile and more than 300 religious institutions, along with active commercial corridors.
Community safety in the area is also bolstered by the Boro Park Shomrim, a volunteer patrol group that coordinates with the 66th Precinct on neighborhood security and regularly assists officers during calls. Even so, this latest incident lands amid a citywide trend that has troubled crime analysts: midyear 2026 statistics showed overall major crime in New York City fell by nearly 6% compared to 2025, but felony assault increased for a sixth consecutive year, according to data from Vital City.
The 44-year-old victim was transported to the hospital following the attack, and her current condition has not been disclosed. Police have not released a description of the attacker and continue to ask anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
