A man was shot Saturday at an apartment complex in Southwest Atlanta, according to police, in an incident that landed at the same address where investigators had just secured murder and arson warrants a day earlier. The shooting happened at 1700 Stanton Road SW, and what led to it remains unclear. The man's condition has not been released.
Police told Atlanta News First the incident happened at that address, and the case remains a developing story as investigators work to determine a cause. The timing is striking: just one day before this shooting, on October 2, the Atlanta Police Department obtained murder, aggravated assault, and first-degree arson warrants for 23-year-old Robert Smith in connection with a September 24 fatal apartment fire at the very same complex, according to the department. Firefighters responding to that earlier blaze discovered a deceased body with severe burns inside an apartment unit.
A Suspect Already Behind Bars
The man charged in the September 24 fire was already being held at the Fulton County Jail on unrelated charges at the time the new warrants were issued, and he has six previous criminal cycles in Georgia, including prior charges for armed robbery, motor vehicle hijacking, battery, and aggravated assault, per FOX 5 Atlanta's reporting. That criminal history places the latest shooting within ten days of a homicide investigation unfolding at the same garden-style apartment property.
The complex has also been the site of police activity. In July 2023, Atlanta Police Zone 4 officers arrested a suspect during a traffic stop at the address who was wanted on outstanding warrants for aggravated assault, armed robbery, and firearm possession during a felony, the department said.
