A man is dead after an argument turned violent in Kansas City's Midtown-Westport area, with police saying the shooter fled before officers could catch him. Officers responded to the 3400 block of Wyoming Street a little after 10:30 p.m. and found an unresponsive man suffering from a gunshot wound.

Medical personnel declared the man dead at the scene, according to KSHB 41. Police said the victim had been in an altercation with an unknown male, which escalated to gunshots that struck him before the attacker ran off ahead of officers' arrival. The Kansas City Metropolitan Police Department said an investigation into the homicide remains underway, and no further details about the shooter or the exact circumstances of the confrontation have been released.

Crime Stoppers is now offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information submitted to its TIPS hotline, the outlet reported, as investigators work to identify the person responsible. The case adds to a tally the station has tracked since its KSHB 41 News Homicide Tracker launched in 2015, a long-running effort to document violent deaths across the metro.

A Familiar Address for Gun Violence

This isn't the first deadly shooting reported in the same stretch of Wyoming Street. In 2023, police identified a 23-year-old man, Javon Norfleet, as the victim of a fatal shooting in the 3400 block, according to KMBC. Separately, FOX4 reported a man was shot and killed in that same block on a Monday night, and another FOX4 report on a homicide near 3400 Wyoming described an altercation involving several people in a parking lot where multiple people fired gunshots, striking the victim, with three persons of interest taken into custody in that case. It is not established whether any of those incidents describe the same shooting as one another or as this week's case.

Nearby Westport has also seen deadly violence before. In February 2025, a man died in a shooting in the adjacent Volker neighborhood. Police at the time believed a fight among multiple people in a building's parking lot led to that shooting, and no one had been taken into custody that night.

Homicides Down Citywide, but Arguments Still Drive the Violence

The latest death comes as Kansas City's overall homicide numbers have been trending downward this year. KCPD data show 108 homicides recorded in 2026 as of Monday, October 19, and separate reporting from KCUR put the same total at a 12% decrease from the same point in 2025. Nonfatal shootings have fallen even more sharply, with 267 recorded by October 19 compared with 338 at the same point last year, a 21% drop, the station reported.

Despite the overall decline, disputes that spiral into gunfire remain the most common thread running through the city's homicides. KCPD's own data lists an argument as the predominant contributing factor in 51 of this year's cases. KCUR reported that the 51 argument-driven homicides excluded a killing on October 18 that remained under investigation at the time of that report.

For now, the man killed on Wyoming Street has not been publicly identified, and police have not released a description of the person who fled the scene. Anyone with information is asked to call the Crime Stoppers TIPS hotline, with a cash reward possible depending on the tip provided.
