A man was shot multiple times on Buffalo's Schreck Avenue Tuesday afternoon, suffering wounds to his legs, arm and torso before arriving at Erie County Medical Center. Buffalo Police responded to a shots-fired call on the street around 2 p.m., and the investigation into the shooting remains active.
According to WKBW, police are asking anyone with information to call or text 911 or the confidential tip line at (716) 847-2255. The outlet, citing police, reported the man arrived at ECMC after being shot in his legs, arm and torso, though his condition has not been detailed.
Schreck Avenue is near Bailey Avenue in Buffalo, according to Hoodline.
A Street With a Violent Past
Tuesday's shooting is not the first act of deadly violence tied to this stretch of the East Side. In February, the Erie County District Attorney's Office announced that 19-year-old Kwincie McCullough had been indicted for second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon in connection with the fatal shooting of 22-year-old Marshawn Small on Bailey Avenue near Schreck Avenue in November 2025, per the Erie County District Attorney's Office.
The block's history of violence stretches back further. In April 2019, 19-year-old Areyona Favors pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter for the fatal stabbing of 21-year-old NaKara Morgan during a house party on Schreck Avenue in August 2018, the Erie County District Attorney's Office noted at the time. Like Tuesday's victim, Morgan was also taken to ECMC, where she later died of her injuries.
Why Victims End Up at ECMC
ECMC, located at 462 Grider Street on the East Side, is Western New York's only Level 1 Adult Trauma Center verified by the American College of Surgeons, and its emergency department treats nearly 70,000 trauma and emergency patients each year.
The hospital also runs Buffalo Rising Against Violence at ECMC, known as BRAVE, which the hospital describes as Western New York's only hospital-based Trauma Recovery Center. BRAVE pairs clinical social workers and crisis responders directly with gunshot victims at their hospital bedside.
Potential Charges If a Suspect Is Identified
No arrest has been announced in Tuesday's shooting, but if a suspect is eventually identified and found to have been carrying an unlicensed, loaded firearm, New York law allows for a charge of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon under Penal Law § 265.03, a Class C violent felony carrying 3.5 to 15 years in state prison. Weapon charges like that one are frequently paired with assault or attempted murder counts in shooting cases, according to the Law Office of Benjamin Greenwald.
Given that the victim was shot in multiple locations on his body, intentionally causing serious physical injury with a deadly weapon could also support a first-degree assault charge under Penal Law § 120.10, a Class B violent felony with a possible maximum sentence of 25 years, per Saland Law PC.
A Mixed Picture on Gun Violence
Tuesday's shooting lands amid a complicated statistical moment for Buffalo. Governor Kathy Hochul announced $36 million in state funding this week for the Gun Involved Violence Elimination initiative, supporting 28 local law enforcement agencies including the Buffalo Police Department, according to News & Photo Features. State data from the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services shows shooting incidents involving injury across GIVE-funded departments fell 19 percent from January through August 2026 compared to the same period a year earlier.
But Buffalo's own numbers tell a more complicated story. City crime statistics show Buffalo logged 84 shooting incidents and 101 shooting victims between January and September 2026, up from 73 incidents and 83 victims over the same nine-month stretch in 2025, while total violent crime fell 8 percent year to date, according to Hoodline's reporting on recent crime trends. Homicides in the city fell 16 percent over the same period, even as non-fatal shootings ticked upward.
Tuesday's shooting is the latest in a string of East Side gunfire this month. Hoodline has also reported on a shooting on Landon Street that sent a victim to ECMC, a shooting at Rose and Carlton streets that grazed a woman, a shooting on Deerfield Avenue near ECMC, and a man shot in the torso near downtown who arrived at the hospital in a private vehicle. Anyone with information on Tuesday's shooting is asked to call or text 911 or the confidential tip line.
