A Corridor With a Troubled Recent History
Wednesday's shooting adds to a string of violent incidents that have rattled this particular stretch of South Memphis in recent months. In June 2025, two men, including a community employee, were shot and killed following an argument inside the Memphis Rox Climbing and Community Center on East McLemore Avenue, as reported by La Prensa Latina. That gym has otherwise served as a prominent climbing facility and community hub for the neighborhood.
Just three months later, in September 2025, officers responded to an armed robbery at a gas station at 221 East McLemore Avenue after a woman was held up at gunpoint, per department records.
Further back, in April 2021, prosecutors indicted four individuals following dual drive-by shootings in the 1500 block of East McLemore Avenue that left four people wounded after suspects fired roughly 130 rounds, the same office's records show.
Citywide Numbers Tell a Different Story
Part I crime in Memphis was reported down 36%. The violence on East McLemore stands in contrast to a broader citywide trend.
Homicides fell 60% during that same second quarter, and the department's Homicide Bureau reached an 81% clearance rate, up sharply from 47% a year earlier, per the same MPD report. Memphis recorded 184 homicides in all of 2025, its first year under 200 since 2019 and a 47% drop from the city's 2023 peak, according to data cited by BiggerPockets.
Soulsville USA's Cultural Anchor
The Stax Museum of American Soul Music is at 926 East McLemore Avenue, according to BaseLocal. The area has community facilities, even as the corridor continues to see recurring violent crime calls.
