Oakland police investigated two separate attempted kidnappings and assaults near Lake Merritt on Monday morning, with both incidents unfolding before 9 a.m. near Grand Avenue and Harrison Street. The children, who were in strollers at the time, were accompanied by adults when a man reportedly tried to snatch one child and then attacked a second child in a stroller nearby, according to investigators and one of the mothers involved.
The reported attacks happened along the shore of Lake Merritt, beside the Cathedral of Christ the Light and across the water from Children's Fairyland, according to KTVU. The stretch is beside the Cathedral of Christ the Light and across the water from Children's Fairyland.
Oakland police arrested the suspect, though authorities have not released additional details about his identity, per the same report. One mother whose child was targeted posted video of the encounter to TikTok under the handle @alexa.inspiration, saying she wanted to warn other parents in the area to be careful.
A Mother's Warning Spreads Online
The TikTok video was shared specifically to alert other families who frequent the Lake Merritt path, the station's report notes. Details about the video itself — including its exact content or how widely it has circulated — have not been independently verified beyond the mother's stated intent to caution others walking the same stretch of shoreline.
Police have not said whether the two stroller incidents Monday are connected to each other beyond occurring in the same area within the same short window of time before 9 a.m. The arrest resolved at least the immediate threat, but the lack of public detail about the suspect has left many of the specifics of the case unanswered for now.
Echoes of a 2022 Case, But No Confirmed Link
Monday's incidents call to mind an earlier Oakland case from July 2022, when family members told officers that an unknown individual threatened them and tried several times to take their 2-year-old child near an AC Transit platform at High Street and International Boulevard. In that case, the suspect assaulted the child's mother before fleeing when a good Samaritan arrived, according to ABC7 News.
Police at the time described that suspect as a Hispanic man in his 40s to 50s, about 5 feet 10 inches tall and roughly 280 pounds, per the same report. Family members told officers that the individual made several unsuccessful attempts to take the toddler before physically assaulting the child's mother.
Oakland's police department maintains a daily log of incidents, arrests, and other activity handled by officers citywide, according to the City of Oakland.
Under California law, a person who attempts to commit a crime but fails, or is interrupted or prevented from completing it, can still be punished under the state's statute governing criminal attempts, per California Legislative Information. It remains unknown what charges, if any, have been filed in connection with Monday's arrest near Lake Merritt.
