A Mansfield teenager is due in court later this month after a state trooper's radar caught his Nissan Sentra going more than three times the posted speed limit on Route 44. Connecticut State Police say 19-year-old Ivan McKenzie was driving approximately 95 mph in a 30 mph zone when he was stopped Tuesday evening, with an adult passenger riding along for the high-speed run.

According to Connecticut State Police, a Troop C trooper was on proactive patrol near Route 44 and Bonemill Road at around 6:17 p.m. Tuesday when he spotted a white Nissan Sentra with a Rhode Island registration plate traveling eastbound. Using radar, the trooper determined the car was moving at roughly 95 mph through an area where the posted limit is just 30 mph, police said.

The trooper pulled the Sentra over and identified the driver as McKenzie, a Mansfield resident born in September 2007, according to the same police account. An adult passenger was also in the vehicle at the time of the stop, though police released no further details about that individual.

Both Reports List Two Charges

The state police release lists McKenzie as charged with reckless driving under Connecticut General Statutes Section 14-222 and second-degree reckless endangerment under Section 53a-64, a criminal statute in Title 53a. Section 14-222 appears in the Connecticut General Assembly's published chapter on vehicle and highway use. WTNH also reports both charges.

Connecticut's reckless driving statute, Section 14-222, is identified in state law simply as “Reckless driving,” per the Connecticut General Assembly's published chapter on vehicle and highway use.

Teen Released on Bond, Arraignment Set for Late October

McKenzie was taken into custody following the stop and later released on a $1,500 non-surety bond, state police said. He is scheduled for arraignment at Rockville Superior Court on October 27, according to the state police account, which noted that no further details were being released at this time.

As WFSB reported, the case has drawn attention largely because of the sheer gap between the posted limit and the speed troopers say McKenzie was driving on Route 44 in Mansfield. No additional outcome has been confirmed ahead of the scheduled court date.
