A 34-year-old man was stabbed in the chest shortly after 5 a.m. Saturday after leaving a lounge in Sheepshead Bay, in what police described as an unprovoked attack near Avenue U and E. 23rd Street. The victim was reportedly headed out to meet a friend when a masked assailant punched him in the face and plunged a knife into the right side of his chest before fleeing on foot.
According to New York Daily News, the attacker ran east on Avenue U after the stabbing, and police are now searching for a masked man dressed in all black. EMS rushed the victim to Coney Island Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition. As of the latest update, no arrests had been made.
No Clear Motive, No Suspect in Custody
Police have not offered a motive for the attack, and the Daily News report does not identify the victim or the name of the lounge he had just left. The outlet's account leaves the exact distance between the lounge and the stabbing site unclear, and investigators have not released any suspect description beyond the dark, masked clothing.
The case echoes other recent Brooklyn stabbings this year. In late May, 34-year-old Isaiah Freeman was stabbed in the chest near Seaview Avenue and Rockaway Parkway in Canarsie and later died at Brookdale Medical Center, with police reporting no arrests in that case either, per the Daily News. In late April, a fatal stabbing outside a cocktail bar on Broadway in Bushwick left a 26-year-old man dead and a 28-year-old man injured, though that case saw two persons of interest taken into custody and a knife recovered at the scene, according to amNY.
Crime Trends Across Brooklyn Vary by Precinct
Brooklyn-wide data paints a mixed picture of violent crime this year. Major crime across the borough fell 5.2% in the first half of 2026, according to Vital City, part of a citywide decline of 5.6% over the same period. Still, felony assault complaints across New York City ticked up 0.4% from the prior year to 14,802 in the first half of 2026 — a figure Vital City notes sits 48% above prepandemic levels.
Those citywide numbers don't necessarily reflect what's happening in any single precinct. Earlier this year, the 83rd Precinct reported a sharp rise in major crime, up 37% year-to-date through mid-April compared to the same period in 2025, even as murders in that precinct dropped to zero from four during the same stretch the year before, per amNY. The available data covers different precincts and time periods, so it shouldn't be read as a direct measure of safety in Sheepshead Bay specifically.
For now, the Saturday morning stabbing remains an open investigation, with the attacker's identity and motive still unknown. Anyone with information has not yet been directed to a specific tip line in the available reporting.
