The Dallas Mavericks will hold Nellie Night on Wednesday, Nov. 18, honoring Hall of Fame coach Don Nelson when they host the Golden State Warriors at American Airlines Center. Tip-off is set for 8:30 p.m. Central Time, and the night is shaping up as a full tribute to the man who once ran the Mavericks' bench and remade their fortunes.
According to Dallas Sports Journal, the first 10,000 ticketed fans in the arena will receive a commemorative deck of playing cards inspired by Nelson, and Mavericks players will wear special Nellie shooting shirts during pregame warmups. The in-arena program is scheduled to include tributes, storytelling about Nelson's Mavericks tenure, and contributions from his family, former players, coaches and friends.
The Mavericks will also donate $25,000 to the Humane Society of North Texas in Nelson's name, the outlet reports. The Dallas Morning News adds that the Nov. 18 game is the first of three Cooper Flagg Rookie of the Year bobblehead nights this season, with fans able to purchase a game ticket and Flagg bobblehead as one package. Flagg was voted the NBA's Rookie of the Year for the 2025-26 season, as reported by USA Today, after Dallas selected him first overall in the 2025 draft. The Mavericks have additional bobblehead nights planned for a Nov. 30 game against the Boston Celtics and a Dec. 2 game against the Orlando Magic, according to The Dallas Morning News.
Nelson's Mavericks Legacy
Nelson coached Dallas from 1997 to 2005, compiling a 339-251 record over eight seasons, per NBA.com. He led the franchise to the playoffs in four consecutive campaigns from 2000 to 2004, and the league later elected him to the Basketball Hall of Fame as a coach in 2012. Mavericks CEO Rick Welts said in a statement that Nelson changed the Mavericks' trajectory, left a lasting organizational imprint and contributed to a memorable era for the franchise.
Nelson's résumé stretched well beyond Dallas. He won 1,335 regular-season games over 31 seasons, ranking second in NBA history, the same Dallas Sports Journal report notes. His Mavericks tenure came during what the Mavericks have described as his run as both general manager and head coach in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
'Nellie Ball' and a Rival Tribute Out West
Nelson was known across the league for a fast-paced offensive approach nicknamed “Nellie Ball” that relied on smaller, more athletic players to seek mismatches and outrun opponents, according to The Athletic. That style later defined his years coaching Golden State, where he engineered the Warriors' 2007 first-round upset of the top-seeded Mavericks as the No. 8 seed, as reported by the San Francisco Chronicle.
Golden State held its own Nellie Night at Chase Center on Oct. 6, where former Warriors Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson joined franchise icon Chris Mullin for a pregame Q&A, the Chronicle reported. Stephen Curry has credited Nelson with unlocking his creativity and letting him play freely late in his rookie season, telling the paper that Nelson challenged him while also unlocking the fun of the game. The Warriors announced in August that they will wear a Nellie band on their uniforms throughout the 2026-27 season. Dallas fans will get their own chance to send off the coach who built the Mavericks' first sustained winning era when Nellie Night tips off next month at American Airlines Center.
