McAllen police are asking the public to help identify a man caught on surveillance camera who they believe is connected to the theft of a 2022 black BMW X1 SUV. The vehicle was reported stolen on October 23 from a parking lot in the 100 block of East Ridge Road, and it later turned up nearby with damage, according to police.
Officers investigated the reported theft the same day it happened, as reported by Texas Border Business. During that investigation, detectives obtained surveillance images showing a person believed to be tied to the theft. Per ValleyCentral, the BMW X1 was taken from a parking lot on the 100 block of East Ridge Road in McAllen.
What the Surveillance Photo Shows
The man captured on camera is described as wearing a dark-colored shirt, shorts and shoes, and he appears to have short, dark hair, according to the released images. The photo itself was provided by the McAllen Police Department. Investigators have not said whether the man pictured has been identified or located since the images were obtained.
The BMW was recovered a short distance from the parking lot where it had been taken, but it had sustained damage by the time it was found, per the same account. No further detail on the extent of that damage or the exact recovery spot has been released.
How to Submit a Tip
Anyone who recognizes the man in the photos or has information related to the investigation is asked to contact the McAllen Police Department or McAllen Crime Stoppers at 956-687-TIPS (956-687-8477). Callers to Crime Stoppers may remain anonymous.
A Citywide Drop in Vehicle Thefts
The case comes as McAllen's overall motor-vehicle theft numbers have been falling. The city's 2025 National Incident-Based Reporting System crime report shows 44 motor-vehicle theft offenses for the year, down from 101 in 2024. Of those 44 cases, police recovered 34 of the stolen vehicles, with the report breaking the thefts down into 14 automobiles and 30 trucks. The department also logged 232 auto-theft calls for service in 2025, according to the same report.
Separately, a report from KRGV noted that several Rio Grande Valley cities have reportedly seen a rise in truck thefts, with police saying thieves have been targeting certain models. The BMW X1 case in McAllen remains an open investigation, and no arrest or charge has been announced.
