A shooting shut down the Alma School Road overpass near US-60 in Mesa on Wednesday afternoon, snarling a busy stretch of road lined with restaurants and a gym while authorities worked the scene. A 33-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound and later died at the hospital.
Authorities are investigating a shooting near Alma School Road and US-60, according to ABC15, which reported that the shooting forced closure of the Alma School Road overpass near the freeway. ABC15 reported that it remained unclear whether anyone was taken into custody. Telemundo Arizona similarly reported that Alma School Road was closed in both directions while police investigated a case in the area, with the road blocked to vehicular traffic at the bridge crossing US-60 on Wednesday afternoon.
Alma School Road And Onramps Reopen
ABC15 reported that Alma School Road and the eastbound and westbound US-60 onramps had since reopened. A 12News snippet separately described the scene as active, though that detail carries lower confidence than the other reporting on this story.
The corridor affected by the closure is a commercial stretch. Telemundo Arizona notes that the Alma School Road corridor includes several businesses, including a gym and various restaurants, meaning the shutdown had the potential to disrupt traffic for customers and employees along that stretch.
A Familiar Scene On This Stretch Of US-60
This is not the first time a Mesa police shooting has forced a lengthy closure along this corridor of US-60. In August 2025, Mesa police shot a man they were pursuing on the freeway between Country Club Drive and Loop 101, according to azcentral.com. That shooting shut the freeway down for several hours, the outlet reported, before it reopened.
Details of that earlier closure, reported by Yahoo News, show how long these incidents can tie up traffic. ADOT first posted about the west Mesa closure just before 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 10, 2025, and both directions of US-60 between Alma School Road and Country Club Drive did not reopen until just before 6 a.m. the next morning, per the outlet's account. Officers were not hurt in that incident, and a suspect was taken to the hospital, the report said.
It remained unclear whether anyone was taken into custody after Wednesday's shooting near Alma School Road. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear.
