A sedan and a work van collided in Middletown on Monday morning, leaving a 58-year-old man hospitalized in serious condition with possible internal injuries. The crash happened in the 400 block of Warwick Road, drawing a heavy emergency response as crews worked to reach anyone who might have been trapped inside the vehicles.
According to First State Update, New Castle County EMS crews were dispatched to the scene after the initial call included reports of people trapped. New Castle County paramedics treated the 58-year-old man for possible internal injuries before he was transported to Christiana Hospital in Stanton in serious condition by Volunteer Hose Company of Middletown ambulance personnel.
A second man, believed to be around 60 years old, was also evaluated at the scene. That man declined further medical care, per the outlet's report, though it remains unclear how he was connected to the crash beyond being evaluated alongside the more seriously hurt driver.
Multiple Agencies Respond to Warwick Road
The response brought together several New Castle County emergency agencies. Delaware State Police, New Castle County paramedics and the Volunteer Hose Company of Middletown all responded to the crash scene on Warwick Road, the same outlet's account notes. Delaware State Police are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision, though no additional details about what led to the crash have been released.
Warwick Road has seen serious and fatal crashes before. In 2025, Delaware State Police investigated a fatal hit-and-run on Delaware State Police-covered Middletown Warwick Road, where an e-bike had been traveling in the northbound lane or right shoulder about a mile north of Strawberry Lane. A separate collision the year before, documented by the same agency, involved a Ford F-250 stopped in the left turn lane on Warwick Road eastbound while waiting to merge onto the Delaware 301 northbound ramp.
Prior Fatal Crash Nearby
Further south on the same roadway, a 24-year-old Middletown man died after a two-vehicle collision on Warwick Road south of Middle Neck Road, according to Bay to Bay News. That crash involved a Mercury Grand Marquis that collided head-on with a Jeep Grand Cherokee at approximately 8:18 p.m., and the road was shut down for about seven hours while the scene was cleared.
State crash-data platforms note that their figures remain unofficial. Delaware's public crash dataset, maintained by data.delaware.gov, is intended to let the public analyze potential crash sites and hazardous roadway conditions, while the state's highway safety dashboard cautions that statistics are subject to change as investigations are completed.
No information about citations, road closures or an expected reopening time for the Warwick Road corridor has been released. The condition of the 58-year-old man hospitalized at Christiana remains unknown as Delaware State Police continue their investigation into what caused the collision.
