A motorcyclist died Tuesday morning in a crash on westbound Interstate 80 near the MacArthur Maze in Emeryville, one of several fatal motorcycle wrecks to strike East Bay freeways in recent months. The collision was reported shortly after 6:45 a.m. on westbound I-80 west of Powell Street and left traffic blocked on the highway for at least an hour afterward.
The California Highway Patrol confirmed the rider of the motorcycle died in the crash, according to KTVU. The station reported that a separate eastbound I-80 collision on Sunday afternoon involved a Honda VT motorcycle, a Toyota Prius, a Tesla Model S and a Subaru Crosstrek, and that drugs and alcohol were not suspected to be factors in that crash. As NBC Bay Area noted, the CHP had no other immediate details about Tuesday's crash.
In a separate eastbound I-80 crash Sunday afternoon, KTVU reported that the first, second and third lanes west of Powell Street were shut down for nearly two hours, and that I-80 was not completely reopened to traffic until about 4:20 p.m., per the CHP. NBC Bay Area reported that the CHP had no other immediate details about Tuesday's crash.
A Familiar Stretch of Freeway
Tuesday's fatality is not the first deadly motorcycle crash to hit this same corridor. On Oct. 19, 2025, a motorcyclist was killed in a crash involving three other cars on eastbound I-80 in Emeryville, a wreck that, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, also involved a Honda VT motorcycle, a Toyota Prius, a Tesla Model S and a Subaru Crosstrek near Powell Street. That crash happened around 2:30 p.m. and killed a 58-year-old man whose name was not released, the Chronicle reported.
Other East Bay freeways have seen their own string of tragedies this year. A motorcyclist died in a crash involving nine additional vehicles. Westbound lanes reopened after about an hour and a half, and all lanes were open after roughly four and a half hours.
On Oct. 2, 11 days before Tuesday's Emeryville crash, two more East Bay riders and drivers lost their lives in separate freeway collisions. Bradley Marshall, 39, of Danville, was identified as the man killed when his pickup truck collided with the rear of a tractor-trailer on westbound I-80 at Ashby Avenue in Berkeley, according to the Mercury News. That same day, 61-year-old Herman Velez of Redwood City died after being ejected while splitting lanes on the eastbound Highway 92 transition to I-880 in Hayward, where he collided with a box truck, the outlet reported.
Statewide Numbers Still Elevated
The cluster of fatal crashes echoes a broader trend tracked by state officials. In 2023, 583 motorcyclists were killed in crashes on California roads, a 10.2% decrease from the 649 killed in 2022, but still a nearly 19% increase over the 491 motorcyclist deaths recorded in 2019, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety.
No details have been released about the identity of the motorcyclist killed Tuesday, and the sequence of events that led to the four-vehicle crash remains under review. Commuters passing through the MacArthur Maze corridor can expect continued scrutiny of the area following yet another fatal incident on one of the Bay Area's busiest freeway interchanges.
