Danny Bowley was a 15-year-old football player warming up at Mt. Carmel High School when he suddenly collapsed from cardiac arrest. Bowley has made a full recovery.

Recovery

Bowley has made a full recovery.

The LMNA gene encodes structural proteins found in the nucleus of cells, and mutations in it are known to cause a group of conditions called laminopathies, according to the Merck Manual Professional Edition. These disorders can cause dilated cardiomyopathy, arrhythmias, conduction disorders and an increased risk of sudden death; symptoms can include heart block, palpitations and syncope.

Why Fast Action Matters on the Field

Sudden cardiac arrest is described as the leading cause of death among young athletes, according to Children's Hospital Colorado, which estimates that roughly one in 50,000 to one in 80,000 young athletes die of sudden cardiac death each year. The same source points to 2019 research finding that 83% of athletes survived sudden cardiac arrest when an athletic trainer was present and administered resuscitation, with survival climbing to 89% when an AED was used.

That urgency has played out in other recent cases nationwide. In Pennsylvania, 16-year-old Spencer Davis went into cardiac arrest after a collision during football practice on Sept. 8, 2024, as reported by NBC New York. Davis needed two shocks from an automated external defibrillator before an ambulance arrived and regained consciousness during the ride to the hospital; doctors said initial test results were normal and that the case looked like classic commotio cordis, but they wanted further tests to check for an underlying heart problem. Quick CPR and proper AED use, the outlet notes, can be the difference between life and death in these moments.

Community Fundraiser Set for Nov. 1

Bowley and his family now want to thank the community and the medical responders who helped save him, and they'll get that chance next Sunday. A fundraiser supporting the Bowley family is set for Nov. 1 at Mt. Carmel High School, starting at 4 p.m., according to the same CBS 8 report. The event will include a pancake supper, music, yard games and other activities for the community to gather around the teen's recovery.
