Mt. Fuji Hibachi Steak House has closed its restaurant at The Shops at Highland Village, with restaurant management locked out of the space on Sept. 30. A notice posted on the door attributed the closure to missed rent payments, leaving the longtime hibachi spot's future uncertain and the retail space empty.
According to Cross Timbers Gazette, the closure came after the restaurant failed to keep up with rent payments, a detail laid out in the posted notice. The outlet reports that no new tenant has been announced for the vacant space as of its reporting.
Mt. Fuji had served Highland Village since initially leasing the space in 2010, according to the same report, making it a longstanding fixture in the shopping center. The restaurant had served the community for more than eight years.
What Was On The Menu
The restaurant's menu, per its website as cited in the Cross Timbers Gazette report, featured hibachi-style dishes alongside sushi, soups, salads, coconut shrimp and stir-fried noodles. That range made it a go-to for sit-down hibachi fare in Southern Denton County for well over a decade.
The location itself came with some retail pedigree. Per Chain Store Age, Regency Centers had previously announced that it leased restaurant space at The Shops at Highland Village to Mt. Fuji, with the outlet noting the spot covered 6,475 square feet next to AMC Highland Village 12.
Another Empty Storefront In The Same Center
Mt. Fuji's closure isn't the only recent vacancy at The Shops at Highland Village. Corner Bakery Cafe in the same shopping center was reported to have closed without any real announcement earlier this year, with only a sign posted on the cafe's door, the Gazette's earlier reporting noted.
For now, the Mt. Fuji space sits empty, with no word yet on who might move in next. Shoppers and longtime regulars will have to wait for an announcement on what, if anything, replaces the hibachi steakhouse.
