A multi-car crash on eastbound Interstate 70 at Tucker Boulevard in St. Louis sent one person to the hospital with life-threatening injuries just before 10:30 p.m. Tuesday. Accident reconstruction investigators spent hours working the scene before the roadway reopened to traffic.
According to First Alert 4, the crash involved several cars, according to police. The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department has not released further details on what led to the collision, including how many vehicles were ultimately involved or the identities of those hurt.
One person was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said. Accident reconstruction investigators remained on scene for some time as they worked to piece together how the crash unfolded, the outlet reports. The road has since reopened, though the outlet's report does not specify exactly when the closure ended or how long eastbound lanes were affected.
A Stretch of Highway With a Troubled History
Tuesday night's crash adds to a string of serious wrecks that have played out on Interstate 70 in the region in recent memory. A separate overnight pileup on westbound I-70 west of the Earth City Expressway involved at least six vehicles, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, as reported by Fox 2 Now. That crash killed a 32-year-old Manchester man who was struck while outside his vehicle, and left four others injured, including a 39-year-old woman who suffered moderate injuries as a passenger in a Hyundai Elantra.
Crews diverted traffic onto Missouri Route 141 for four hours while they cleared that scene, the station's report notes. The same report also points to a broader pattern of holiday-season danger on Missouri roads, noting that one highway patrol troop alone handled 65 crashes statewide over a recent Christmas Eve-to-Christmas stretch, resulting in three deaths and 38 injuries.
Similar Wrecks Have Hit Kansas City Too
The danger isn't confined to St. Louis. Kansas City police investigated a late-night rollover crash on eastbound I-70 near U.S. Route 40 that left two people seriously injured, according to KMBC. Police said a gray Jeep Wrangler traveling at a high rate of speed failed to negotiate a curve, struck a concrete barrier, flipped and slid several hundred feet.
One occupant was ejected and taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, while the other suffered serious injuries and was listed in stable condition, per the same outlet's account. All lanes of I-70 were shut down for approximately three hours while crews worked that scene, underscoring how quickly a single crash can tie up the interstate for hours at a time.
No details have been released about what caused Tuesday night's crash at Tucker Boulevard, whether any citations were issued, or the current condition of the person hospitalized. Hoodline will update this story if police release additional information.
