Boston police are asking for the public's help identifying a group of people connected to a trespassing investigation at South Station Tower, the glassy high-rise at 680 Atlantic Avenue. Investigators say security video captured four people slipping into the building's parking garage in September, followed shortly after by two more people who allegedly covered a security camera with a jacket before heading the same way.
Garage Door Led to a 52-Story Climb
According to the Boston Police Department, building security video shows four individuals entering the South Station Tower parking garage at approximately 6:38 p.m. on September 7. The preliminary investigation indicates the group went through an unlocked service corridor door and climbed a stairwell all the way to the 52nd floor, as reported by Boston 25 News.
Police believe that first group of four stayed inside for approximately 45 minutes. Shortly after they entered, two more people reportedly followed the same path into the building — and, according to officers, covered a security camera with a jacket along the way. Investigators believe this second group lingered considerably longer, remaining inside for about 90 minutes before leaving.
Both Groups Believed to Have Exited Near Amtrak Terminal
Officers believe both groups eventually left the tower through a stairwell leading down toward the Amtrak terminal level, putting them in the thick of one of Boston's busiest transit hubs as they made their exit. The station's report does not say whether the two groups were traveling together or acting independently, and it does not identify who the six people are or whether anyone has been arrested, cited, or charged in connection with the incident.
South Station Tower sits on Atlantic Avenue above the South Station transit complex, a point of connection for Amtrak, commuter rail, and the MBTA. Police have not detailed what, if anything, was disturbed or accessed once the groups reached the upper floors, and the full sequence of events laid out in the department's community alert was not fully available.
What Massachusetts Law Says About Trespassing
Massachusetts trespassing law, specifically Mass. General Laws Chapter 266, Section 123, covers people who willfully trespass on certain specified public land or premises. It has not been established whether South Station Tower falls within the categories named in that statute, and police have not said what charges, if any, might apply to the people being sought in this case.
For now, Boston police are asking anyone with information to come forward; the alert lists a District A-1 detectives phone number and anonymous tip options by phone, text, and online. The case remains an open investigation, and no further details about the identities of those involved in the September 7 incident have been made public.
