A woman was shot in broad daylight Wednesday in the heart of Navy Yard, and Metropolitan Police Department officers are now searching for a suspect who fled the area in a dark-colored sedan. Officers were dispatched to the intersection of 4th Street and M Street SE around 5 p.m., where they found an adult female who was conscious and breathing but suffering from a gunshot wound.
First responders located the woman in the 400 block of M Street SE and DC Fire and EMS treated her at the scene before she was transported to a local hospital, according to WUSA9. Police have not publicly released the woman's name or her current medical condition, and it remains unclear whether she and the suspect knew each other. As DC News Now reported, police have not yet released additional information about a suspect beyond the initial search.
Suspect Description And Getaway Vehicle
Investigators are looking for a Black woman wearing a black shirt who was last seen driving a dark-colored Chevrolet bearing Maryland license plate 5GY4386, according to FOX 5 DC. The outlet reports officers responded to the scene around 5 p.m., matching the timeline established by first responders. No arrests have been announced, and it is unknown whether surveillance footage from nearby businesses has produced additional leads.
The shooting unfolded along a stretch of M Street SE that has drawn repeated attention from city officials over the past two years. The corridor sits inside a federally designated Youth Curfew Zone that the Metropolitan Police Department established in Navy Yard during June and July of this year under the Youth Curfew Amendment Act of 2026, a measure that bars groups of nine or more juveniles from congregating in public between 8 p.m. and midnight within a perimeter bounded by I-695, South Capitol Street, and the Anacostia River.
A Neighborhood Already Under Scrutiny
The curfew zone followed a chaotic incident in March, when roughly 200 juveniles gathered near First Street and M Street SE, leading to multiple robberies and the arrest of a 15-year-old boy for unlawfully discharging a handgun in a public park; National Guard members stationed nearby assisted MPD officers during that disturbance, per the department. Mayor Muriel Bowser extended emergency juvenile curfew orders in June after a brawl broke out inside a Navy Yard Chipotle, with teenagers throwing tables and chairs, restricting unchaperoned minors in the area between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Wednesday's shooting also echoes an earlier case just blocks away. In August, an adult woman was shot and killed on the 1100 block of K Street SE, prompting a homicide probe into three suspects who fled in a silver sedan near the Potomac Avenue Metro station.
Citywide Crime Trends Versus Local Flashpoints
The incident comes even as Washington, D.C., recorded a 29% overall drop in violent crime in 2025, including a 32% decrease in homicides and a 37% decline in robberies compared to 2024, according to Metropolitan Police Department data. The department recorded 127 homicides citywide in 2025, down from 187 the year before. Still, MPD's First District, which covers Navy Yard and Capitol Hill, saw a temporary 29% uptick in violent crime between May 10 and June 10, 2025, driven by multiple homicides and auto thefts, officials presented during an Advisory Neighborhood Commission 6B meeting covered by HillRag.
The D.C. Council's 2024 Secure DC Act expanded pre-trial detention standards and law enforcement authority to curb gun violence across Ward 6 and the broader District, a framework Ward 6 Councilmember Charles Allen supported, per HillRag's reporting. Separately, analysis from the Manhattan Institute has noted that while property crimes like auto theft tend to dominate Ward 6's dense commercial corridors, gun violence and homicides have historically been more concentrated in Wards 7 and 8 across the Anacostia River — making Wednesday's shooting notable within the broader geography of the District's violent crime.
Police have not said whether the shooting is connected to any of the earlier Navy Yard incidents, and the investigation remains active. Anyone with information about the suspect or the vehicle is encouraged to contact MPD.
