North Carolina state agents swarmed a scene near Maury Correctional Institution in Greene County Thursday, responding to an officer-involved shooting that left the rural area around Hookerton buzzing with law enforcement and emergency vehicles. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation issued a public advisory confirming its agents were on the ground, though few other details were immediately released.
The NCSBI advisory, first reported by Neuse News, described the scene as very active, with a heavy presence of law enforcement and emergency personnel converging near the prison. WCTI also reported the agency's response to the incident. It remains unclear whether the shooting involved prison operations, an encounter near the facility's grounds, or a separate matter entirely, and no further details about the circumstances have been made public.
A Major Prison Looms Over the Scene
Maury Correctional Institution sits near Hookerton in rural Greene County and is one of the larger facilities in the state's correctional system. According to the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction, the state-operated close- and medium-custody prison houses up to 1,504 adult male offenders and includes specialized mental health and custody units. The facility, which opened in April 2006, looms large over the surrounding farmland and small communities that make up much of Greene County.
That rural character is central to understanding why state investigators, rather than local deputies, are leading the inquiry. Greene County, with its county seat in Snow Hill, covers roughly 269 square miles and is home to an estimated 21,500 residents, according to the North Carolina Sheriffs' Association. Rural agencies with limited staffing often rely on state assistance when a major incident like an officer-involved shooting occurs within their borders.
Why the State, Not Local Deputies, Is Investigating
Under North Carolina General Statutes § 143B-1208.5, the NCSBI may provide investigative assistance upon request; state law does not require the agency to investigate officer-involved shootings. Local agencies routinely hand off these inquiries to avoid any appearance of conflict of interest when one of their own is involved in a shooting.
That independence comes with legal limits on what the public can see in the meantime. Body-camera footage and investigative records generated during an active NCSBI inquiry are confidential under state law and require a superior court judge's order for release, meaning official statements from the SBI or a district attorney's office will likely remain the only confirmed source of facts until the investigation concludes.
Part of a Troubling Pattern Across Eastern North Carolina
Thursday's shooting is not an isolated event for the region. Just 13 days earlier, on October 2, the NCSBI was called to investigate another officer-involved shooting in neighboring Lenoir County near Pink Hill, where two deputies were shot and wounded and the suspect died at the scene after a standoff, as Hoodline reported at the time. One of the wounded deputies underwent surgery for a stomach wound.
The following day, an NCSBI special agent was shot in the leg while assisting Rockingham County deputies during a tactical operation in Reidsville, according to WCTI. The agent was treated at a local hospital before the suspect in that case was taken into custody. Three officer-involved shootings in roughly two weeks, spread across three neighboring counties, mark an unusually violent stretch for state investigators working Eastern North Carolina this autumn.
Local Leadership and Recent Preparation
Greene County's sheriff's office is led by Matt Sasser, who was appointed by county commissioners in March 2022 after serving as chief deputy, succeeding longtime Sheriff Lemmie Smith. Sasser was seeking reelection this year.
It is not the first time Hoodline has reported on violence tied to the Maury area this fall. In late September, Hoodline reported that two Hookerton teenagers were charged with attempted murder after a September 20 shooting, with Greene County deputies making arrests in that case.
No information has been released about potential charges, injuries, or the identities of those involved in Thursday's Greene County shooting, and the investigation remains active.
