An elderly woman is safe after a neighbor pulled her from a burning home on River Street in Boston on Friday night. Firefighters arrived to find she had already been rescued, and the cause of the blaze remains unknown.
Fire Crews Find Rescue Already Underway
The Boston Fire Department says crews responded to 684 River Street after receiving reports of a fire, according to Boston 25 News. Once firefighters got to the scene, they learned a woman was inside the residence. But by the time they entered the burning building, a neighbor had already pulled her out.
The outlet reports firefighters learned that the neighbor was the one who played the hero, getting the woman out of the home before crews could reach her. No further details on how the rescue unfolded, or on the woman's condition, were included in the report, and the neighbor has not been identified.
Cause Still Unknown
As of Friday night, there was no word on what sparked the fire, per the same account. The story was still developing as of publication, with Boston Fire Department officials not yet releasing additional information about the blaze or the extent of any damage to the River Street property.
A Similar Scene Played Out in Roxbury
The River Street rescue echoes another Boston incident in which a neighbor sprang into action during a fire. In that case, WCVB reported that a man named Socrate Joseph rescued a legally blind woman from a burning building at 971 Tremont Street in Roxbury, after a fire broke out there at 3:30 a.m. Joseph described carrying the woman to safety himself, saying, “I just yanked her, put her over my shoulders,” before a firefighter took her from him on the stairs.
In that incident, firefighters had been alerted to the building by a medical alert system, and the woman was later taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, WCVB reported. The cause of that fire also remained under investigation.
