A new women's clothing store and consignment boutique called Belongings is set to open at 10 a.m. on Nov. 4 at 529 Broadway in Sonoma, sharing space inside the children's second-hand shop Nanigins. The shop is owned by Sonoma resident Jennifer Adler and will stock a curated mix of new and pre-owned pieces from mid- to high-end brands.
According to the Sonoma Index-Tribune, Adler spent 10 years working in trend forecasting and fashion before relocating to Marin County and then settling in Sonoma two years ago. That background, paired with her new venture's unusual setup inside an existing children's resale shop, gives the boutique a distinct niche among the town's Broadway retail stretch.
Adler said the placement inside Nanigins was intentional, noting that parents who stop in to shop for their kids can find something special for themselves as well, as reported by pressdemocrat.com. The pairing turns a single errand into two stops under one roof, a convenience that could appeal to busy households juggling both kids' and adult wardrobes.
Opening Day Discount and What Shoppers Can Expect
Attendees at the Nov. 4 opening can expect a 10% discount on purchases, per the same pressdemocrat.com report. Beyond that detail, specifics on pricing, inventory volume, consignment terms, or regular store hours have not been published.
The arrival of Belongings comes as secondhand shopping continues to expand nationally. The U.S. recommerce market is expected to reach $246.7 billion in 2026, an increase of 7.9% from the prior year, according to OfferUp’s 2026 Recommerce Report, published in partnership with GlobalData, as reported by Chain Store Age. The same report found that 90% of U.S. shoppers said they bought something secondhand in the past 12 months, while 51% said they sold something during that same period.
Why Buyers Are Turning to Resale
Economic pressure appears to be a major driver of that shift. The same OfferUp report found that 71% of shoppers said economic or financial concerns influenced their decision to buy or sell secondhand over the past year, and 81% said buying secondhand lets them get what they really want without paying full retail price. The report also found that 38% of recommerce buyers prefer purchasing from someone nearby and picking the item up locally, a preference that could favor a brick-and-mortar shop like Belongings over online resale platforms.
The global secondhand apparel market was projected to grow 127% by 2026. Among Gen Z and millennial shoppers, 62% said they look for an item secondhand before buying it new. Sutter Hospice Thrift, which operates stores in Santa Rosa and Sebastopol, has seen a new wave of younger customers buying inexpensive vintage items and reselling them for profit.
Nanigins, the children's resale shop that will now share its Broadway storefront with Belongings, maintains an Instagram account under the name The Village Children's Shop. For now, the opening date, location, and discount remain the confirmed details shoppers can plan around as Belongings prepares to welcome its first customers next week.
