A 53-year-old man is fighting for his life after being shot in the head near 16th and York streets in North Philadelphia Monday night. Police were called to the scene around 9:40 p.m. and found the man suffering from a gunshot wound to the head, and he was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
According to a report on the incident, officers responding to the call discovered the victim at 16th and York streets with the gunshot wound already inflicted. He was taken to Temple University Hospital, where he remains in critical condition. The same report, also covered by 6abc Philadelphia, notes that the victim's identity has not been released.
No Arrests, No Motive Disclosed
No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, and investigators have not disclosed a motive, per the same account. Those gaps leave the circumstances of Monday night's attack unresolved for now, with police offering no further detail on what led up to the gunfire near 16th and York.
The shooting adds to a string of recent gun violence incidents across North Philadelphia. Earlier this month, a man was shot on the 2900 block of North 11th Street on October 11 and was listed in stable condition, with Hoodline reported no arrests made and the victim's identity withheld in that case either. The outlet also noted that the nearby 2700 block of North 11th Street was the scene of a March 2022 shooting in which a 26-year-old man was found with multiple gunshot wounds inside a residence.
A Teenager Shot in Feltonville
Months before Monday's shooting, a 16-year-old was left in stable condition after being shot in the leg and upper shoulder in North Philadelphia on a Saturday night. That shooting, detailed by NBC10 Philadelphia, occurred around 10:15 p.m. in the basement of a home on the 200 block of East Rockland Street in Feltonville. Police said the teen was with a group of at least three other teenagers, ages 15 to 17, when a 15-year-old handling a gun shot him. That 15-year-old, who may be a friend of the victim, fled the scene, and while at least one spent shell casing was recovered, the gun itself had not been found.
Citywide Shooting Numbers Trending Down
Despite the recent spate of North Philadelphia shootings, citywide figures point to a broader decline in gun violence this year. Through October 8, Philadelphia had recorded 556 total shooting victims, including 115 fatal and 441 nonfatal, a 27% decrease from the 765 victims recorded over the same period in 2025, according to the same Hoodline report. Philadelphia Police Department figures through October 10 also showed 133 homicides citywide, a 22.2% drop from the 171 recorded by the same date the previous year.
Those citywide numbers offer context but don't explain what happened near 16th and York on Monday night. As of now, the victim's name and any motive remain unknown, and police have not indicated whether charges are imminent.
