A breakfast at a Wendy's in Northridge turned into a knife-wielding standoff this week after a man eating his meal stood up, confronted another customer, and pulled a knife on him in what a witness described as a terrifying scene. Los Angeles police detained the man who pulled the knife, though no one was hurt in the chaos that sent chairs flying and both men outside the restaurant, according to KTLA.
Video Captures Confrontation Escalating Fast
Video of the incident, reported by KTLA, shows a man in a baseball hat confronting a couple who were simply trying to eat their meal. The man who was eating eventually stood up and confronted the man in the hat himself, before pulling out a knife in what the outlet described as a threatening manner. At one point, the man in the hat can be heard saying, “You gonna stab me?”
The confrontation didn't stay contained to harsh words. Expletives were shouted and chairs were thrown before both men ultimately made their way outside the restaurant, according to the same report.
Witness Says He Feared for His Life
A witness identified as Jesus Lepit said the man in the baseball hat was the one who initiated the confrontation. Lepit said he felt his life and another customer's life were in danger, along with the safety of the restaurant's employees, as the situation unfolded inside the Wendy's, as reported by KTLA.
Los Angeles police detained the man who pulled the knife following the altercation. The man wearing the hat told police that a knife had been pulled on him, as noted by KTLA. It remains unclear whether the man who pulled the knife will ultimately face charges, and the outcome for the man who allegedly started the confrontation is also unclear.
California law distinguishes brandishing a weapon from assault with a deadly weapon. Penal Code § 417 makes it a crime, outside self-defense, to draw or display a deadly weapon in a rude, angry or threatening manner, or to use one unlawfully in a fight or quarrel. A separate assault-with-a-deadly-weapon law may also be relevant in some cases. The detention alone does not establish which, if any, charge prosecutors will pursue.
Remarkably, no one was injured in the incident despite the thrown furniture and the knife brandished mid-altercation. Beyond the detention, no further details on an LAPD statement or any booking information have been made public.
The incident comes as Los Angeles reported a decline in one major measure of violent crime: the city’s 2025 crime data report recorded 19% fewer homicides than in 2024, the lowest homicide total since 1966. That citywide homicide figure does not measure knife incidents or restaurant altercations, and it cannot show whether this confrontation reflects a broader trend. The circumstances and potential charges in the Wendy’s case remain unresolved.
