Nucor is putting $60 million into expanding its Towers & Structures facility in Trinity, Alabama, a plant that only opened last September and sits right next door to the company's Decatur sheet mill. The project is expected to create 60 new jobs paying average annual wages above $87,000, as the steelmaker races to keep up with utility companies modernizing power infrastructure across the country.
A Fast Follow-Up to a Brand-New Plant
According to a Nucor press release, the expansion will add production capacity, additional laydown space and a dedicated galvanizing inspection area to the Trinity site. The company said the investment will enhance its ability to serve utility customers who are expanding, modernizing and reinforcing power infrastructure nationwide. Notably, the Trinity facility only began operations in September 2025, meaning Nucor is already scaling up a plant that's barely a year old.
Leon Topalian, Nucor's chair and chief executive officer, said utilities across the country are investing heavily to strengthen and modernize the power grid. Per the same company statement, Topalian said locating the expansion beside the Decatur sheet mill combines domestically produced steel with efficient manufacturing to serve utility customers and support long-term infrastructure needs.
Local Leadership Welcomes the Growth
Laurent de Mey, vice president and general manager of Nucor Towers & Structures, said Nucor has deep roots in Alabama and is pleased to continue growing its Trinity operations. De Mey said the expansion will enable higher production, improved utility customer service and high-quality regional jobs, and he thanked Governor Ivey, the Alabama Department of Commerce, Morgan County, the city of Decatur, local chambers of commerce, and other state and community leaders for their support. As al.com notes, Nucor Towers & Structures manufactures steel utility structures that support electric transmission and critical infrastructure. The expansion remains subject to regulatory and other approvals, the company said.
Nucor employs more than 2,700 teammates across 12 locations in Alabama, including three steel mills that primarily use recycled scrap to produce new steel products. The investment extends what the company describes as its longstanding commitment to Alabama and its communities — a presence that already includes Nucor Steel Tuscaloosa's $280 million rolling mill investment in 2023, according to al.com.
Part of a Bigger National Buildout
The Trinity project is one piece of a much larger expansion strategy. Nucor formed its Towers & Structures business unit in 2022 after acquiring Summit Utility Structures LLC and its Pennsylvania manufacturing facility, and the company has since opened new plants in Alabama and Indiana. Per IndexBox, Nucor is also constructing a fourth Towers & Structures facility in Utah, expected to start operations in 2027.
That Utah project, a $200 million facility on Nucor's existing Brigham City campus, is expected to create 200 full-time jobs, the company announced in January 2025. Nucor said at the time that demand for utility infrastructure in the western United States is being driven by new energy supply, grid-hardening initiatives, and increased load growth from data centers, EV charging stations and electrification. Nucor was also completing construction on facilities in Decatur and Crawfordsville, Indiana, as of that announcement.
The Indiana site has since gotten its own growth plan. The company plans to invest $105 million to expand its Crawfordsville facility, pending regulatory and other approvals, according to Plant Services. That project is expected to create 100 new jobs with average annual wages of $87,500 and add more than 120,000 square feet of manufacturing space, incorporating advanced automation and modern production equipment. Nucor and its affiliates, which describe the company as North America's largest recycler, make steel and steel products at operating facilities across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
