A vacant warehouse near Fifth Avenue and Brooklyn Basin caught fire Saturday night, sending 35 Oakland firefighters racing to the scene just after 8:15 p.m. Crews had the flames under control in about 40 minutes, and no injuries were reported.
The blaze prompted a single-alarm response, according to the Oakland Fire Department, which confirmed firefighters knocked down the fire at the abandoned structure in just over half an hour. The department had not released details on what sparked the blaze, and the condition of the warehouse itself wasn't addressed in the initial report.
confirmed the Brooklyn Basin location in a brief social media post following the response.
A Familiar Scene for Oakland Fire Crews
This isn't the first time an empty Oakland warehouse has drawn a large firefighting response. Back in June 2025, a two-alarm fire tore through a vacant warehouse in East Oakland, reported just after 8 p.m. in the 1300 block of Fruitvale Avenue near International Boulevard, according to the station's report. More than 35 firefighters worked that blaze, and an incident commander declared it under control about an hour after it was first reported.
Like Saturday's fire, no injuries were reported in the 2025 incident, and the cause of that fire was still under investigation at the time, per the same account. The similarities between the two responses — comparable crew sizes, vacant structures, and nighttime timing — highlight the recurring challenge empty warehouses pose for Oakland fire crews, though the evidence does not establish whether the two incidents share any connection beyond their general resemblance.
What Remains Unknown
Details about Saturday's fire remain limited. The cause has not been verified, and information about the warehouse's ownership, its connection to the broader Brooklyn Basin development, or any damage estimate has not been released. For now, officials have confirmed only the basics: a vacant structure caught fire, a sizable crew responded quickly, and everyone walked away unharmed.
