Ocean Beach's biggest fall party is trading lederhosen nostalgia for Y2K nostalgia this weekend, with a 21-and-over festival set for Friday and Saturday at the OB Pier Parking Lot featuring two stages of music, a stein-holding contest and a neon-lit throwback to the year 2000. General admission runs $20 at the gate, while VIP tickets cost $75 and include a custom one-liter OB2K Oktoberfest mug filled with two beers.
The festival takes place Friday from 4 to 11:30 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 11:30 p.m. at the OB Pier lot, where Newport Avenue meets the pier, according to Locale Magazine. Live bands will play the Jägermeister Main Stage both days, while the Buzz Cannabis Electronica Stage delivers high-energy DJ sets — a two-stage format Times of San Diego reports the festival is using for the second year. VIP ticket holders also get access to the Main Stage VIP area, dedicated restrooms and priority re-entry, per the same Locale Magazine report.
A Y2K Theme With Deep Roots
Saturday night brings the Y2K After Dark Neon Party to the Electronica Stage from 8 to 10 p.m., according to OB Oktoberfest's own site. Heather Hudson, the festival's director of partnerships, told Times of San Diego the throwback theme is a fitting one — OB Oktoberfest got its start in 2002, making Y2K a natural nod to the event's own origins. Hudson said Saturday's Y2K-themed lineup includes a lip-sync battle and a dance-off contest alongside the music.
Festival founder Scott Slaga, who owns Winstons Beach Club, was introduced to Oktoberfest traditions on a trip to Munich in 2000, per Times of San Diego's reporting. Two years later, Slaga and the Ocean Beach MainStreet Association launched the inaugural OB Oktoberfest at Dusty Rhodes Park. Slaga has said the San Diego version intentionally departs from the oompah-band template, noting the festival has its own music and is held on the ocean rather than following a traditional format.
Contests, Games and a Friday Locals Night
Expect stein-holding competitions, a pretzel toss, a brat-eating contest and the Mr. & Ms. Oktoberfest Bikini Contest, according to Locale Magazine's rundown of this year's lineup. Times of San Diego also lists nostalgic games and interactive experiences woven throughout the weekend. Friday's festivities kick off with Flashback Friday Locals Night, which includes a Local Legends stein hold, cash grab giveaways and 2-for-1 beers until 5 p.m.
Saturday adds its own daytime twist with the OB+RL Beach Party, running from noon to 5 p.m. and featuring the Mr. & Ms. Oktoberfest Bikini Competition as one of its headline draws, per Times of San Diego. The event has since expanded its footprint to cover more beach area between the Ocean Beach pier and the main lifeguard tower, according to OB Rag, which also noted the Electronic Stage has featured a rotating slate of electronic artists across both festival days in recent years.
Where the Money Goes — and a Fundraising Discrepancy
Proceeds benefit the Ocean Beach MainStreet Association's Friends of OB program and the Peninsula Alliance, according to Times of San Diego, with organizers saying the festival raises over $50,000 per year for community partners. The OB Oktoberfest website states the event has donated more than $850,000 to local organizations to date. That figure conflicts with earlier reporting from San Diego Beer News, which put the cumulative total raised at $800,000; the discrepancy between the two figures has not been explained.
The festival has also evolved in format over the years, moving from Dusty Rhodes Park to Del Mar before settling into its current spot where Newport Avenue meets the beach, according to background from Ocean Beach San Diego. Organizers have described the shift toward a nontraditional, music-driven format as a deliberate move, with one organizer telling the San Diego Union-Tribune in 2023 that there was room to do something different and capture a younger audience. That same year, general admission cost just $10 at the gate with $49 VIP tickets available online — both well below this year's $20 and $75 price points.
