The cause of the fatal crash on Interstate 40 in Canadian County remains undetermined. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is investigating, according to News 9.

The crash was reported at about 5:30 a.m. Thursday near mile marker 107, News 9 reported. The Penny News put the time at roughly 5:29 a.m. KFOR located the crash eastbound near Calumet.

Brandon Schopfer, 31, of Hinton, died after his car struck a semi-truck that was stopped on the shoulder with a flat tire. News 9’s account of information from OHP says the car spun before the collision and Schopfer was pronounced dead at the scene.

KOCO reported that Schopfer was alone in the car and was not wearing a seat belt, and that the semi-truck driver was not injured. News 9 reported that no other injuries were recorded.

What statewide safety data says

The Oklahoma Highway Safety Office says most motor vehicle fatalities in Oklahoma result from driver behaviors, including failure to wear a seat belt. That statement does not quantify deaths specifically involving unrestrained occupants or establish what caused this crash.
