Ozone Alert in Effect
An Air Quality Alert for ozone is in effect across the Oklahoma City metropolitan area Friday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., the National Weather Service alert says.
The Association of Central Oklahoma Governments operates a regional air-quality alert system serving Canadian, Cleveland, Logan and Oklahoma counties, distributing notifications to residents, businesses, industry and government agencies. State forecasters weigh weather forecasts, monitoring data and atmospheric-chemistry models when estimating ozone levels, and DEQ notes that people can help limit pollution by reducing vehicle trips on alert days. ACOG’s Central Oklahoma alert program describes its regional reach, while DEQ explains how ozone alerts are forecast.
The ozone alert is a forecast of elevated pollution, not a guarantee that unhealthy levels have already been measured. Oklahoma DEQ issues alerts when next-day ozone levels could reach the AQI’s orange “unhealthy for sensitive groups” range or worse. The National Weather Service’s alert for the Oklahoma City area runs from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday; people with heart or respiratory conditions are advised to reduce outdoor exertion, while the public is urged to limit unnecessary driving and other pollution-producing activities. DEQ’s alert criteria and health guidance and the NWS alert details explain the precautions.
