India Norman has been missing since Friday night, when strong winds flipped the kayaks she and a friend were paddling on Tom Steed Lake in southwest Oklahoma. Her friend made it out of the water safely. Norman did not, and search crews have been combing the lake for her ever since.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says it is searching for Norman after the wind-driven capsizing separated the two paddlers, according to News 9. Troopers say both kayaks overturned in the gusts, and while the other kayaker was found safe, Norman has not been found. The agency says it is throwing everything it has at the search, including its dive team, as efforts continue into this week.
Family Pleads for a Miracle
Norman's loved ones have asked the public for prayers as the search drags on, the station's report notes. They have said they need answers and, in their words, a miracle — and that more than anything, they just want her home.
As of the latest update, the search for Norman remains ongoing, per the same account, with no indication that crews have called off the effort. Tom Steed Lake sits in southwest Oklahoma, the body of water where the two women had been kayaking together when the wind turned the outing into an emergency.
A Familiar Pattern on Windy Waters
Capsized kayaks triggering open-water searches are not unique to Oklahoma. On June 1, 2025, first responders searched Castaic Lake for a missing man after strong winds reportedly capsized a kayak and sent two people into the water, according to KTLA. In that incident, lifeguards were able to quickly pull a woman wearing a lifejacket from the water to safety, but her companion remained missing, KTLA reported. Dive teams were reportedly deployed there as well, and a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department helicopter circled the lake searching for signs of the missing man, with authorities saying they had not yet identified either the rescued woman or the man still unaccounted for.
No such details about equipment, life jackets, or identifying information have been released in Norman's case. For now, what's confirmed is the sequence that set the search in motion: two kayaks, a gust of wind, and one paddler who didn't make it back to shore. Her family waits for word, hoping the search that has stretched on since Friday night ends with her coming home.
