One person was killed when a Nissan Frontier and a Nissan Rogue collided on State Route 67 near the San Vicente Reservoir, with the impact leaving the Rogue flipped on its side, someone trapped inside, and a small fire burning before a witness managed to put it out.
The crash happened shortly before 11 a.m. just south of Slaughterhouse Canyon Road in Eucalyptus Hills, according to the California Highway Patrol, as reported by 10News. One person was trapped in the wreckage after the Rogue overturned, and one person died at the scene, CHP said.
The collision also sparked a small fire, which a witness extinguished before it could spread further, per the same account. No additional details about injuries to anyone else involved have been released.
Conflicting Accounts Of The Closure
Exactly which stretch of SR-67 was shut down during the response is unclear, with two official accounts differing. The outlet's report states the collision forced closure of the roadway between San Vicente Avenue and Scripps Poway Parkway, while the City of Poway, in a post on X, said Highway 67 was closed between Poway Road and Scripps Poway Parkway, with officials estimating the closure would last three to four hours. The City of Poway later posted that Highway 67 had reopened.
A Stretch Of Highway With A Troubled History
This is not the first fatal crash recorded near this same stretch of SR-67. In July 2023, a 65-year-old San Bernardino County man was killed in a solo motorcycle crash on northbound SR-67 just south of Slaughterhouse Canyon Road, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. That crash occurred shortly after 6:30 a.m., and the rider died at the scene, with CHP closing the northbound lanes for several hours to investigate.
Deadly crashes along State Route 67 have previously raised safety concerns among San Diegans, according to CBS8. The exact cause of this latest crash has not been disclosed, and the identity of the person killed has not been released.
