A Year of Declining Violence, With Families Still Grieving
The shooting comes as Kansas City has reported fewer homicides this year than at the same point in 2025. As of July 15, the city had recorded 71 homicides compared with 89 around the same time the previous year, according to KCUR. The outlet also reported that nonfatal shootings had dropped, with 183 recorded as of July 12 compared with 217 at the same point in 2025. Kansas City ended 2025 with 139 homicides, the station noted, the city's lowest total in seven years.
Kansas City Police Department Captain Jacob Becchina attributed part of the decline to a nearly 50% reduction in homicides in June 2026, which pushed the year's total below 2025 levels, per the same KCUR report. The department also reported an 85% homicide clearance rate as of mid-July. Separately, kshb.com reported that Kansas City, Missouri, has recorded 102 homicides so far this year, compared with 121 at the same time last year.
Those numbers don't erase the grief for families who have lost loved ones this year. James Heberling was killed on Sept. 16, and for his father, kshb.com reported, he is far more than a number. The same outlet noted that group-related homicides involving violent group members identified by the Kansas City Police Department fell 40% between May 2024 and August 2025.
As of early Friday, police had not released the identity of Thursday's victim or said whether a suspect was in custody. Hoodline will update this story as more information becomes available.
