A man is dead and two others are recovering from gunshot wounds after a chaotic overnight shooting scattered gunfire across a Kansas City neighborhood near East 80th and Michigan. Police say they were called to the area of 81st and Brooklyn around 11 p.m. following reports of gunfire, only to hear more shots ring out once they arrived nearby.
Officers responding to the initial call heard multiple gunshots near East 80th and Michigan as they reached the scene, according to KSHB 41 Kansas City. Police also received several additional reports of gunfire while they were still responding to the area, and multiple people were seen fleeing the scene near East 80th and Michigan as the chaos unfolded.
Officers found an adult man who had been shot, and he was taken to a hospital, where he later died, police said. Two additional adult men suffered non-life-threatening injuries; one arrived at a hospital in a private vehicle, while the other was taken by paramedics, according to the same report. The Kansas City Police Department is now investigating the shooting as a homicide involving three victims.
Argument May Have Sparked the Gunfire
Preliminary information indicated the shooting may have resulted from an argument, police said. Detectives have since contacted multiple persons of interest for further questioning as they work to piece together exactly what happened and who opened fire.
Kansas City's own crime data lists arguments as the predominant contributing factor in 51 of the city's 110 homicides recorded in 2026 as of October 28, according to the Kansas City Police Department. Of those 110 homicides, 59 had been cleared as of the same date, the department's data shows.
Shooting Lands in a Patrol Zone With a Mixed Record
The East Patrol division had recorded 30 homicides in 2026 as of October 28, per the same police department data. That tracks with a broader citywide trend: as of October 15, East Patrol had logged 30 homicides compared with 42 at the same point the previous year, a drop reported by KCUR.
Citywide, KCPD reported 108 homicides as of October 19, a 12% decrease from the same point in 2025, the station noted. Nonfatal shootings have also fallen sharply, with 267 recorded by October 19 compared with 338 a year earlier, a 21% decrease, according to the same KCUR report.
Part of a Broader Multi-Year Decline
The overall trend builds on a decline that began well before this year. Kansas City homicides fell by 5% in 2025 compared with 2024, reaching the lowest number since 2018, according to a news release from the Kansas City Police Department. Non-fatal shootings fell by 31% over the same period, the department reported.
Separate figures compiled by The Kansas City Star put the 2025 metro-area homicide count at 183, down from 190 in 2024, though that outlet's tally includes fatal police shootings and is not directly comparable to the police department's own count, as noted by kansascity.com. Kansas City itself ended 2025 with 139 homicides, the lowest total in the previous seven years, per KCUR's earlier reporting.
The area near 80th and Michigan has seen deadly violence before; the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office previously announced charges in the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Mauricia Strother near 80th and Michigan in May 2020. No arrests or charges have been announced in connection with the shooting investigated overnight, and police have not released the identities of the man who died or the two others who were wounded.
