A stabbing on the 1300 block of Third Street in Rensselaer sent one person to the hospital early Thursday morning, and police say a suspect has already been located and taken into custody. The incident happened around 4 a.m., according to investigators, who say the victim and suspect knew each other.
The Rensselaer City Police Department said the victim was transported to a local hospital for further treatment, as reported by news10.com. Police have not released the identities of either the victim or the suspect, and no additional details were available at the time, according to WRGB.
No Threat to Public, Police Say
Investigators determined that the stabbing stemmed from an encounter between two people who were already acquainted, rather than a random attack. Per the same account, police emphasized that there is no threat to the public following the incident. The case remains an active and ongoing investigation, and WRGB has said it plans to update the story as more information becomes available.
Rensselaer has seen violent incidents before, though this case differs in scale from the city's most recent homicide. In September 2025, 34-year-old Michael Bermudez-Gagnon was charged with second-degree murder after 32-year-old Brent Reed was fatally stabbed in the chest at a John Street residence, according to the Times Union. Reed was pronounced dead at Albany Medical Center Hospital, and authorities said Bermudez-Gagnon fled the scene before he was later arrested.
A City With a Rare History of Homicides
Rensselaer police Chief Warren Famiglietti said at the time that there was no threat to the community after that homicide, echoing the same reassurance investigators have now offered in Thursday's stabbing. The Times Union also noted that the city's last killing before the 2025 case occurred at 1500 Broadway on July 7, 2023, underscoring how infrequently such violence has struck Rensselaer in recent years.
No further details about the circumstances of Thursday's stabbing have been released, and police have not said whether charges have been filed against the suspect now in custody. Hoodline will update this story as more information becomes available from the Rensselaer City Police Department.
