A 7-year-old Orlando girl who once rang the bell to celebrate beating leukemia is now fighting the disease a second time, and her family is asking the public for votes that could bring her $25,000 and a spot as a superhero in her own comic book. Chloe Bennethem has been nominated for the Stan Lee Foundation Super Kid award, a nationwide competition that lets supporters cast daily votes on her behalf.
Chloe is currently battling cancer again, following a previous successful recovery from the illness, according to WFTV. The station reports that if she wins the nationwide competition, Chloe stands to gain a $25,000 prize and have her personal narrative adapted into a dedicated comic book. Chloe's father, Chuck Bennethem, works for Channel 9, and supporters following the family's story can vote once every 24 hours for free, with additional votes available to those who choose to donate.
A Second Fight, After Ringing the Bell Once Already
Chloe's path back to this moment began with an earlier battle that, for a time, looked finished. She previously recovered from leukemia, but is now fighting the illness again.
The Super Kid competition offers Chloe a chance to advance through the voting rounds as supporters rally behind her.
How the Nationwide Contest Actually Works
The competition Chloe is part of has drawn wide national interest. Hundreds of children from across the United States have entered the competition, and the voting is down to the top 10, according to KSL.com, which reported that three Utah children also made that group. The top five finalists will then advance to the next round of voting, and the final winner will be announced on or before Dec. 17, per that report.
Whoever ultimately wins takes home more than cash. The first-place winner will receive $25,000, four VIP tickets to the 2027 L.A. Comic Con, and be featured as a champion in a limited-edition comic book, KSL.com reported.
Who's Actually Behind the Competition
Despite its name, the contest isn't run by the charity most people associate with Stan Lee's legacy. The competition's official rules, posted at thesuperkid.org, state that Colossal Management, LLC operates the Stan Lee's Super Kid Competition and is solely responsible for its administration, and specify that the competition is in no way owned or operated by The Stan Lee Universe or The Stan Lee Foundation.
The rules also make clear that families and voters aren't required to spend a dime. No purchase, donation, or payment of any kind is necessary to enter or win the competition, according to the official rules, though voters who want to cast more than one ballot per day may choose to donate if they wish. The rules further state that disputes related to participation are generally handled through individual arbitration rather than in court before a judge and jury.
A family that once celebrated the ringing of a bell is now asking a nationwide audience to vote each day, with additional votes available to those who choose to donate, hoping it adds up to something that matters.
