A 33-year-old Orlando man is dead after his motorcycle collided with an SUV near Interstate 75 west of Belleview Monday evening, in a crash investigators say began when the SUV turned directly into his path. The collision happened around 7:30 p.m. at the intersection of County Road 484 and Southwest 17th Court.
According to wcjb.com, the SUV tried to make a left turn onto the Interstate 75 ramp and crossed into the path of the oncoming motorcycle. The motorcyclist was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the station reported.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers are investigating the deadly crash west of Belleview, per the same account. As of Tuesday morning, WFTV reported that the crash remains under investigation, with no additional details released.
What Investigators Have Confirmed So Far
The limited details released so far leave several basic questions unanswered. Authorities have not released the identity of the motorcyclist beyond his age and hometown, nor have they disclosed the SUV driver's condition or identity. It also remains unclear whether the SUV driver will face any citations or charges in connection with the crash.
The stretch of road where the crash occurred, near the interchange with I-75, sees a steady mix of local traffic and highway-bound vehicles merging on and off the interstate — a combination that has proven dangerous in other Marion County crashes involving motorcycles.
Pattern of Deadly Motorcycle Crashes in Marion County
This is not the first fatal motorcycle crash troopers have investigated in the area this year. In June, a 69-year-old man from Lady Lake died after crashing his motorcycle into a tree in Marion County on a Tuesday night, according to wcjb.com. In that case, Florida Highway Patrol said the rider had been traveling eastbound on Southeast 175th Street in Weirsdale at around 8:30 p.m. before leaving the roadway; troopers said he died at the scene.
No further updates have been released on Monday's crash near County Road 484, and Florida Highway Patrol has not indicated when additional information about the SUV driver or possible charges might be made public.
