The Orlando Museum of Art is swapping its usual quiet gallery strolls for a night of gothic theater, costume contests and themed cocktails this Friday, Oct. 30. Shadows in the Galleries: A Night of Southern Gothic & Hauntings marks the museum's first time staging an adults-only Halloween event, with performers roaming the darkened exhibition halls instead of static paintings on the walls.
According to Orlando Weekly, the night is billed as a devil's night-style gathering for guests 21 and older, mixing mysterious characters and unexpected surprises throughout the museum at 2416 N. Mills Ave. There is some disagreement over start time: Orlando Weekly's reporting lists the event beginning at 6 p.m., while WFTV and Gotta Go Orlando report the event running from 8 p.m. to midnight. Hoodline could not independently reconcile the discrepancy.
Phantasmagoria Haunts the Halls
Central Florida storytelling troupe Phantasmagoria is set to perform throughout the galleries during the event, per WFTV's reporting. The group recently staged a performance of Frankenstein, according to Orlando Weekly, and its presence is central to the evening's gothic framing — guests are meant to wander dimly lit galleries where haunting stories and unexpected surprises channel the eerie beauty of the American South, as described in a separate piece from Orlando Weekly covering Halloween weekend happenings.
Costumes are encouraged for the occasion, whether haunting, mysterious or fantastical, that same Orlando Weekly report notes. The museum is also running a costume contest alongside the performances, giving attendees another reason to dress for the theme rather than simply observe it.
Drinks, a DJ and a Photo Booth
Beyond the roaming performers, the night includes themed cocktails, light bites, a live DJ and dancing, along with a photo booth for guests to capture the evening. WFTV's report describes the lineup as costume contests paired with themed drinks, hors d'oeuvres, music and dancing meant to keep the museum's galleries lively well past its usual closing hours.
Tickets start at $75, with VIP experiences priced at $130, according to Gotta Go Orlando. The event is restricted to guests 21 and older, per the same WFTV report, making it a firmly adults-only addition to the museum's calendar rather than a family-friendly Halloween outing.
